Behold the What?!
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Friday, August 24, 2012
You’ve probably heard about the sad (and it would be funny if it wasn’t so tragic) story of the well-meaning parishioner who repainted the fresco of Jesus and turned it into a muppet. Here’s the story.
Ecce Homo (Behold the Man) by Elias Garcia Martinez has held pride of place in the Sanctuary of Mercy Church near Zaragoza for more than 100 years.
The woman took her brush to it after years of deterioration... READ MORE
Church History Through Film

Over at In the Sheepfold, Kelly is working on compiling a list to teach her children all about church history through movies. Brilliant!
The history teacher in me is all about people and places and dates. The Catholic in me wants to crack open the lid that is the treasure trove of our faith and stand in awe at the work God has done through ordinary men and women throughout the ages. I hope all of... READ MORE
A Room with a View

We arrived here in New York City yesterday on the next leg of our little journey to the East. Adam and I are now enjoying a few days with Eric, who is spending the summer here in the big city. This is a place that will fill up your senses. Everywhere you turn there is something to see, to hear, and yes, to smell!
Imagine the delight of this Catholic Mom when we checked into our tiny hotel room, opened... READ MORE
Timeless Truths and New Beginnings

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of celebrating Mass with my sister, brother in law, mom, and nephews Evan and Tyler in their beautiful Chicago parish, St. Alphonsus. Over the years, I’ve watched my sister’s parish be renovated and have seen this jewel be restored into an amazing place of vibrant worship. Every time I enter their church, I spot a new treasure—and this past weekend, I had the... READ MORE

Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.
A few months ago there was a popular You Tube Video entitled “Why I Hate... READ MORE
Remembering One Bishop, Welcoming Another

Today, I will pause my workday to attend 12:15 mass at our beautiful cathedral in remembrance of Bishop John T. Steinbock, who died one year ago today. During the past year, our diocese has mourned his loss, prayed for our new Bishop, and been ably and faithfully led by Msgr. Myron Cotta.
Last week, early Thursday morning, we received the happy news of the appointment of our new shepherd—- Bishop Armando X. Ochoa... READ MORE
A Woman's Place

The very first Eucharistic congress was held in 1881 in Lille, France. The very first organizer, according to Vatican Information Services, was a woman.
It is not widely known that the idea to hold these congresses came from a woman, a French woman called Emilie-Marie Tamisier, one of the many lay people to dedicate their lives to the defence of the Church at a time in which anti-Catholic polemics... READ MORE
Cry Room Conundrum
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Thursday, August 04, 2011
For the first time in a long while, I am a frequent visitor of the dreaded Cry Room. It’s not my favorite place to hang out, but it’s our best option right now.
We’ve been in a very nice season for a long while. After what felt like eternity with our oldest four we finally had everyone trained with good behavior and had even managed to move to the very front of our church. When Henry came along, he... READ MORE
Does NFP Need a Makeover?
Posted by Danielle Bean in Marriage on Thursday, July 28, 2011
After being both encouraged and discouraged by the response to my recent column at Crisis on the topic of NFP, I was especially interested to see this column addressing what the author, Ashley McGuire, sees as a real need for a “re-branding” of NFP in the Catholic Church:
... it’s marketed in a profoundly unsexy way. My NFP workbook features on its cover a woman in baggy pastels with a grocery bag... READ MORE
What Moms Want
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Faith on Tuesday, March 01, 2011
Next Monday, I have the pleasure of providing a webinar called Catholic Moms: Building and Sustaining Small Groups to Support the Vocation of Motherhood aimed at sharing perspectives on what we parents—and especially we moms—“want” from our parishes. I would love it if this team of experts could help me prepare my “homework” by pondering and commenting on the following questions:
* How can your... READ MORE
