First School

Today my daughter Camilla started school.
She’s almost six and in first grade, but she’s never gone to school before, as we chose to homeschool her in kindergarten for a number of reasons. But she’s ready for school this year, and we’re ready to send her. We’re lucky to have some great local Catholic school options, and we chose the one we thought would be the best fit for our family. We applied,... READ MORE
My Back Won't Always Hurt Like This

When Camilla was a newborn she screamed for hours. Starting when she was three weeks old our evenings were filled with it: pacing, rocking, bouncing, driving around the neighborhood at midnight. We’d try anything to get our precious child to calm down.
During that time I read somewhere that infant fussiness peaks at six to eight weeks and I thought despondently, “We will not make it. That is a forever... READ MORE
Family Faces

At a recent family wedding, my husband’s aunt came up to me at said, “I was watching all of you from across the room and thinking, ‘I wonder if it bothers Arwen that she has four children and none of them looks anything like her?’”
I was sort of… startled. I must have looked at her strangely, because she continued, “You know. They just all look so much like Bryan did when he was a little boy!”
And... READ MORE
Train Up A Child

“Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
That Proverb is one I learned as a girl and wrote it just now from memory (but I had to look up the verse, Proverbs 22:6). My parents had a book of Proverbs and we learned a new verse each week. I bet we hemmed and hawed about having to memorize these short lines. I don’t remember complaining but I just can’t... READ MORE
Tough Parents

Here’s a piece of good news for those of us blessed with children: a recent study found that when exposed to a cold virus (to which they were not immune), parents were 52% less likely to catch it than non-parents.
Read the whole story here. It’s pretty interesting.
I was especially fascinated that they couldn’t figure out exactly why the parents in the study were less likely to get sick, but there was a significant difference. What do you think the reason could be?

Thanks so much to Hallie who shared this story of the car-less mother who totes her six children around by way of bicycle. How fun!
Lately I’ve been thinking about adventures with my kids, what kinds of things I’m willing to do on my own with them versus waiting for my husband. Summertime often prompts these ruminations. I want to go off and have fun, to take them places and try new things. But…I... READ MORE
Special Sense

Our identical twins look very much alike.
They can’t fool their sister, though. Even when my husband and I have to take a second look to make sure we have the right twin, Camilla never hesitates. I’m not sure how she knows, but she identifies her baby brothers correctly every time.
I’ve noticed this talent of hers for a while, but I was still impressed last weekend. We picked up our copy of the new... READ MORE
Summer Fun
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Tuesday, June 12, 2012
I have such fond memories of my childhood summers.
Long bike rides, hours spent reading in the hammock, water balloon fights with the neighbor kids… it was all wonderful. (You see how I’ve conveniently blocked out memories of the chores, even though there were plenty of those.) So much freedom, so many fun things to do, such good weather. Summer as a child was the best.
Summer as an adult is different.... READ MORE
Children's Book Book Club
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Tuesday, May 22, 2012
I love the idea of online book clubs, but in practice they’re hard. Typing up my thoughts about an entire novel takes too much time.
Still, talking about books is fun, and last week as I listened to my sister reading aloud to my children, I realized: children’s books are full of insights, but short enough that you can discuss them in a single post and comments.
An idea was born: how about Children’s... READ MORE
Second Child

“Second Child’s Mom” wrote me this past week and shared this photo of a golden-haired cutie snacking off of the floor. To protect the innocent, she shall remain nameless, but I will say that I personally know this mom well and can totally vouch for her parenting skills.
The photo made both of us chuckle. This is “Second Child Mom’s” toddler who came after a ten year wait and struggle with infertility.... READ MORE
