Help a Mom become a Faith Teacher
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Faith on Tuesday, August 07, 2012
Almost every day, I receive emails from moms around the world who are working diligently to become better at their vocations. Many of their questions take me back to experiences I’ve had in my own life and I can offer the perspective of an older mom who’s “been there, done that”. One of the areas where I fall short consistently is with questions related to homeschooling. My boys attended a wonderful... READ MORE
Putting the Faith Pieces Together

A reader wrote me recently with an interesting question. Her family recently moved from foster care to adoption with two wonderful new daughters, a preschooler and a preteen. Both daughters had previously been raised in an extremely strict, fundamentalist way of life. Their exposure to Catholicism has been absolutely limited, leaving their new mom at a loss as to where to begin with their faith formation.... READ MORE
Filling Our Empty Churches

The headline reads, “Archdiocese Turns to Evangelizing,” and reports a new plan for getting Catholics in Boston—only about 16% of whom attend Sunday Mass regularly—back to Church.
I blush to read it.
On the one hand, of course I’m delighted whenever anyone takes up “the new evangelization” in earnest.
What’s “new” about the new evangelization is that its focus is not mission territory in the classic... READ MORE
Catholicism: Are You Watching?

Back in May Danielle alerted us to Fr. Robert Barron’s Catholicism Project. It’s here!
I haven’t been home to see the first installments on public television, but some friends were telling me last night that it’s blockbuster: stunningly gorgeous, and not didactic or preachy.
If you haven’t caught the buzz, here are a few links which describe what people are excited about, and how parishes and prayer... READ MORE
Learn To Pray With the Psalms
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Faith on Tuesday, June 28, 2011
Last week’s papal audience was dedicated to praying with the Psalms.
First, a reminder:
We’re trying to collect 60 rosaries for Benedict XVI’s 60th anniversary of ordination tomorrow. Post your pledge here between now & July 1st.
On to the Psalms!
The pope starts with a brief explanation of what they are:
In the Psalms, joy and suffering, desire for God and the perception... READ MORE
Intercession Is The Mercy of God
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Faith on Monday, June 06, 2011
Here’s a beautiful thought from the pope’s catechesis on prayer last week.
Focusing on Moses’ prayer on behalf of the worshippers of the golden calf, Benedict returns to a point he’s already made about intercessory prayer: it is God’s will in us.
If God wished to punish and avenge and no more, he would have no cause to tell Moses what he’s thinking, the pope teaches.
He could just “zap” everybody... READ MORE
Intimate Friendship With Christ

The Pope’s catechesis on St. Teresa of Avila yesterday amused me.
Near the start he recounts this cute scene from her childhood. As a 9-year-old girl, she was inspired by the lives of some martyrs she read about, so she ran away to be martyred.
“I want to see God,” said the little girl to her parents.
Alas, this piety didn’t last into adolescence…but we know she ended well!
Later he summarizes her... READ MORE
Whole Family Catechesis
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Faith on Tuesday, January 25, 2011
Tonight I had the pleasure of speaking at a parish which employs “Whole Family Catechesis” as a part of their religious education program. The evening started with a family dinner, and then the kids went off to class, the Dad’s had a men’s group and the moms joined me for a discussion based upon The Handbook for Catholic Moms.
I was so inspired that this parish is really working to form the whole... READ MORE
