A Fortnight Sermon I had to Share

Our pastor preached on the Fortnight for Freedom this past Sunday. At first he had us scratching our heads, wondering why he was re-telling part of Dickens’ Christmas Carol. But the strangeness of hearing that story in July certainly got us listening.
After it was over, the congregation broke into applause. I later asked for his sermon notes, and published an edited version on Catholic Exchange. I encourage you to take a look at it.... READ MORE
St. Thomas More, pray for us today!

Today in the Liturgy of the Hours there is this marvellous reading—a letter from the imprisoned St. Thomas More to his daughter, Margaret. Thomas is the patron of the Fortnight for Freedom, so it’s important to remember him, and ask his intercession this day. His letter reminds us that no matter what the outcome of our current protest on the healthcare mandate, all is in the hands of God, and in this... READ MORE

Seminaries in African are bursting at the seams. Indeed, Africa has sent “missionaries” to American dioceses in need of priests. It is a continent rich in faith. But its seminaries are poor in materials. Have you ever seen the library of an American seminary, bulging from floor to ceiling with multiple copies of every theological classic, papal document, and encyclopedia a student might need? In addition,... READ MORE

Some years ago I’d proposed an idea for an article about special needs children for a christian publication. The editor said no, he didn’t think there would be enough interest, since, after all, only a tiny percentage of the readership were dealing with special needs children. I came back at him with statistics to show that it probably wasn’t so tiny a percentage as he thought. He agreed with that... READ MORE
Best meal of the year

It’s an object lesson for young families who are just starting to establish catholic holyday customs.
During the early years of our marriage, I read http://www.amazon.com/Year-Our-Children-Catholic-Celebrations/dp/1933184272 by Mary Reed Newland. She suggested a Holy Thursday meal made up of the foods that Jesus and his disciples would have eaten at the Last Supper: unleavened bread, roast lamb, ... READ MORE

It’s hard to imagine a church that does not have carvings, paintings, or plaques depicting the fourteen stations of the cross. But prior to the 17th century, stations were not a widespread piece of church decor. Starting in the late Middle Ages, the Franciscan order developed this devotion as a way of symbolically recreating the prayerful walks along the via crucis that pilgrims to Jerusalem made.... Above is a video of a famous song that was a big hit when I was, let’s see, maybe a freshman in college. It kind of works for Ash Wednesday, in a non-liturgical setting, that is. What’s kind of interesting about the video is it shows how the members of Kansas have aged over the years—how they are clearly on their way to becoming dust. As are all of us.
Of course, the song’s lyrics don’t go far enough.... READ MORE

Just hours after reading Danielle’s shout out to Robyn Lee I received a book that we’ll want to get Robyn’s opinion on. And I’ll be sending it to my (single) oldest daughter for her opinion as well. In the meantime, I can tell you that The Catholic Girl’s Survival Guide for the Single Years by Emily Stimpson has a lot going for it. For those who judge books by their covers—need I say more? This one’s... READ MORE

I just arrived back from Walmart with a bag full of pecan turtles, Ghiradelli squares, Dove hearts,Belgian truffles and red and pink M&Ms. This yearly pilgrimage to the Valentine candy aisle takes place every February 15th, except when Lent starts early. It was fun to people watch while picking out these half price goodies. All the customers were women. Some of them kept picking things up and putting... READ MORE
A new closet for $7.99

Since our marriage in 1980, Bill and I have lived in 8 different homes. Only once did we have the luxury of a walk-in closet. Because both our budgets and our architectural whims run to vintage farmhouses, we’ve often had to share some very small closets. That’s the case in our current home as well, where our garments have hung in a mere 3 and one half foot space. True, there is a large hall closet... READ MORE
