Throughout the season former player Clive Walker provides radio and TV commentary on Chelsea's games. Here he selects five aspects of an overdue home win over the Geordies that caught his eye…

1: I saw Newcastle play the week before against Spurs and they didn't have much of a cutting edge that day, and it proved the same again on Saturday. Although they beat Spurs in their first game I thought before our game they were never really going to threaten us as long as we scored first. The penalty was that breakthrough but the second goal just before half-time was perfectly timed. Barring a silly mistake or a massive stroke of luck, I couldn't see Newcastle getting back into the game after that.

2: Chelsea defended very well on Saturday.
In pre-season we were finding it hard to keep clean sheets and I am sure that is something they would have taken on board in training and worked hard on. Newcastle have three main players who could have caused us problems in defence. Hatem Ben Arfa drifts and if he gets on the ball and starts enjoying himself, that can be a danger but we pushed him very deep and because of that he was rarely a threat in and around the penalty area. The others are Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba and they play more as individuals than as a pair. What they have got is a surprise element and you have to mark them so tight and concentrate for 90 minutes because of that. They also worked harder than whenever I have seen them previously but it didn't do them any good because we defended so well.

3: The one moment when Newcastle truly threatened to break through was when Petr Cech saved low down from Ba near the end of the game. Ba had two bites at the cherry having not connected properly first time and if that had gone in we could have seen a grandstand finish to the game. It was probably the only difficult save Cech had to make and it was very important. Having not had much to do for 80 minutes, and coming off the back of a mistake in the last game, his concentration was perfect.

4: The attacking players are working out a good pattern of play and understanding between them.
We are seeing Juan Mata and Eden Hazard combining really well together but not only them, also Fernando Torres who is becoming so much more influential in our link-up play. In the past he has not been a part of that so much, he has been Torres on the end of things up front. But he is now part of the overall pattern and he is going to be linking up with Oscar as well when he plays as well.

5: What we have when Ryan Bertrand plays in midfield is someone who can offer similar to Ramires on the other flank. Bertrand works very hard, has good pace but hasn't got the style of play that Hazard and Mata have, so he can add some balance. It is going to be a rarity to see Oscar, Mata and Hazard to all play together, so Bertrand and Ramires are influential in us becoming a team as well. Also Bertrand on the left-hand side is working so well with Ashley Cole - one goes forward and one stays, and there is good communication and a good balance. All-round the performance was that of a team working well together with individuals who have something special.
