Throughout the season former player Clive Walker provides radio and TV commentary on Chelsea's games. Here he selects five aspects of the opening weekend win that caught his eye…

1: After the first six minutes when we were 2-0 up, thoughts were suddenly of the 8-0 win we had against Wigan three seasons ago.
But you have to give some credit to Wigan, they didn't panic, they continued to play their brand of football and they gradually got themselves into the game without looking like scoring in that first half. They were getting back pride by not capitulating but I did feel if we had got the third before half-time then we could have gone on and got a lot more.

2: We saw a picture of things to come when Oscar came on in the second half.
We have to understand that at times it is not going to be total expansive and pretty football but there are going to be occasions when it will be. It looks like Oscar has got something about him for sure, suggesting he can be a stylish playmaker as well as others. Hazard has already shown we can get a spark from him in pre-season and we know about Mata. Playing all three might not be an option, we might have to accept that it is going to be two from three. Then we have Marko Marin who is going to come into it and Ramires to return from illness so there is a lot of juggling that is going to go on.

3. Before the game started we were discussing in commentary the formation and we couldn't agree who was going to start where.
We thought Mata would start behind Fernando Torres but as the game progressed, Mata and Hazard were both on the right-hand side quite a lot, playing intricate football together. Wigan like to play with a back three so there was going to be a space to attack in wide areas and that maybe why in the first-half hour we saw them working together down the right. Whatever the team sheet states, they are not going to stay in those positions. Roberto Di Matteo wants running off the ball, creating space for others and in that we can see a different style to last season.

4. When you've won the Champions League it is all about tweaking as opposed to monumental changes.
We triumphed in Europe because we were solid at the back but now we are solid at the back with a midfield with an abundance of ball-playing talent. When the team went 2-0 up there was an eye on not conceding, something we have been proud of over the years. The guys at the back want to get back to that to give the solid base for the creative players to do what they want.

5. It would have been the icing on the cake if Torres had managed to score and finish the game off. He had a shot cleared off the line and his work rate was tremendous. He lacked some service in the second half and I hope he doesn't get frustrated. He needs to keep ticking over with a goal here and there but he doesn't have to score the first goal every time. I never felt Wigan were going to beat us. We didn't want to give them a lifeline of a goal to make it a grandstand finish and thankfully we didn't.
