OpenOffice.org for Mac

Publisher's Description

From OpenOffice.org:

This office productivity suite for Mac OS X includes desktop applications such as a word processor, a spreadsheet, a presentation manager, and a drawing program, with a user interface and feature set similar to that of other office suites. OpenOffice.org also works transparently with a variety of file formats, including those of Microsoft Office.

by: CNET Staff on November 07, 2008

A credible rival to MS Office, OpenOffice.org includes powerful applications for making text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, diagrams, and databases, as well as HTML and XML documents. Not only does it let you edit basic documents, such as letters and faxes, it also handles equations and complex and multipart documents with bibliographies, reference tables, and indexes.

The interface is similar to that of MS Office, and even advanced Office users will find almost everything they're used to: templates, collaborative features (versions, recording changes), macros, and even a programming language. OOo, as it's known, lets you open and save documents in formats as diverse as MS Office formats, PDF, HTML, and XML. It can also import files from those formats, as well as WordPerfect and others. However, it normally saves files in the open-standard Oasis OpenDocument XML format, for maximum compatibility with other applications.

The latest versions of OpenOffice have seen a spurt of growth in the extensions available for the program. These include templates for professional writers, an export tool for bidirectional functionality with Google Docs, blog publishing, and others. Blog publishing assistance especially strikes us as a natural area for word processing to grow toward.

We were pleased to find that stability has improved too. No doubt about it, the multilingual and crossplatform OpenOffice.org is a compelling option for anyone in search of an alternative office suite.

"Does everything I need and then some"

    August 19, 2012  |   By adpaxton

    Version: OpenOffice.org 3.4

    Pros

I am using Open Office instead of Microsoft Office. I was fed up with most bloated Microsoft products. Open Office seems to be more flexible and intuitive than MS Office. I am extremely pleased with this software. Great to be able to open and save documents in so many formats.

    Cons

I liked the drag and drop option in MS Office for inserting pictures. Placing pictures in an OO app is more long winded. I've had trouble opening (particularly re-opening) some documents by clicking on the document icon. Opens fine from file/open but is slow or seems to get stuck if opened from the document icon.

"Just great for normal everyday use or professionals"

    July 27, 2012  |   By WannaBteacher

    Version: OpenOffice.org 3.4

    Pros

I've used OpenOffice when I was in college to help get my papers/essays done at least those that were lengthy or complicated. I loved all the features that matched Microsoft. The programs that ran on my university computers mostly used Microsoft office and dream weaver. Since I couldn't afford to buy MS Office, I was very happy to have found OpenOffice. I was very much a nuby with this kind of word program, and I never did quite get the hang of everything. However, it didn't crash or stall as often as some of the others that I was using at the time also.

    Cons

Getting the tool bar buttons out and used is quite complicated. They don't seem to be that clear as to what they represent. It's very slow opening at least on my G4 iBook.

    Summary

This is a very powerful word program. Although it's good for everyday use, I think it's more for professional people/office workers. It's packed with everything under the sun just about. It takes a very long time to learn how to navigate around w/this application. It was helpful and very useful for me while I was in college as I often times had to write lengthy papers as an education major. I had many drafts and rewrites. As a grad student, part of my education was to be able to use and navigate around the internet and use the computer in an efficient manner. I'm glad that OpenOffice allowed me to "practice" using things that I don't normally use everyday like inserting links or anchors, placing frames or place holders, using tables etc. For an application that rivals MS Word and it's free, I say, it's well worth getting to know how and how to use this application.
