Roche 'gets US green light to sell diabetes eye drug'

Swiss pharma giant Roche said Monday it will sell in the United States a drug that treats a diabetes-related illness linked to blindness after getting the regulatory green light.

The US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) decision means that Roche can take Lucentis to the US to treat diabetic macular oedema (DME), a condition that causes swelling, blurred vision and blindness in people with diabetes.

In a statement Roche called the development the "first major treatment advance in more than 25 years for (the) sight-threatening condition."

"For the first time, Americans with diabetic macular oedema will have access to an FDA-approved medicine shown to help many patients rapidly regain substantial amounts of lost vision," said Hal Barron, global product development director at Roche.

Lucentis is described by Roche as the "first and only FDA-approved medicine" to help those with the condition, which is otherwise treated with limited success by laser surgery.

Nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes which is the principal cause of blindness in America, Roche said in a statement.

More than 560,000 have related macular oedema and one in 10 people with diabetes will get DME during their lifetime, the Basel-based manufacturer added.

According to Swiss market analysts Helvea, sales of Lucentis could reach $1.6 billion (1.3 billion euros).

Well, this is all well and good, except that we can be sure that Roche and their ilk will never find an outright cure for diabetes as long as a patient can be kept on a lifelong course of outrageously priced treatments. If there is a cure, it's down there in that warehouse with the Ark of the Covenant, Jimmy Hoffa, cars that run on tap water, etc.

there is not a cure for type 1. there are life sustaining treatments... lemme know when my pancreas will grow back. I had a pancrectomy and would love to be healthy and normal again...

There is a cure for Type II, gastric bypass surgery. There are cures in the making for type I, mainly from stem cells...So...what are YOU talking about?

There are two main compounds in marijuana. THC, you all know about, gets you high and all that. But cannabidiol, CBD, most of you have never heard of. CBD will NOT get you high, its effects are purely medicinal. New strains of "High CBD" cannabis, with little THC, are now being sold in MMJ states.

Now with that in mind run a search and read the abstracts these medical studies- "Cannabidiol Preserves Retinal Neurons and Reduces Vascular Permeability in Experimental Diabetes", "Cannabidiol lowers incidence of diabetes in non-obese diabetic mice", "Neuroprotective and Blood-Retinal Barrier-Preserving Effects of Cannabidiol in Experimental Diabetes", "Cannabidiol Attenuates Cardiac Dysfunction, Oxidative Stress, Fibrosis, and Inflammatory and Cell Death Signaling Pathways in Diabetic Cardiomyopathy", and "Cannabidiol As a Putative Novel Therapy for Diabetic Retinopathy: A Postulated Mechanism of Action as an Entry Point for Biomarker-Guided Clinical Development".

CBD may prevent diabetes. CBD will slow or stop the progress of both diabetic retinopathy and diabetic neuropathy, and it will help protect your heart from diabetic cardiac dysfunction. Pretty good for something that is growable in your back yard!

To learn more about CBD, run a search for "Granny Storm Crow's MMJ Reference List"!

Cancer and diabetes are certainly huge financial markets... which means there will probably never be a cure.

CBD can prevent diabetes in mice! It should work in humans, too! Run a search for "Cannabidiol lowers incidence of diabetes in non-obese diabetic mice". The fact that people get high with marijuana is one of the lesser reasons marijuana is illegal. What will happen to Roche's new drug when folks find out CBD works just as well, and you can grow it for free!

You know folks I have a feeling there has been a cure for diabetes, but doctors and pharmaceuticals don't want you to know. More money for them. C'mon after more than fifty years they very well know something. I heard along time ago that diabetes was caused by a virus. They want us in the dark.
