Chicago's Catholic Cardinal George has recurrence of cancer

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Chicago's Roman Catholic Cardinal Francis George had cancerous cells removed from his kidney and liver this week, six years after he underwent surgery for bladder cancer, the diocese said on Friday.

George, who oversees 2.3 million Catholics in the nation's third-largest diocese after Los Angeles and New York, had a procedure on Wednesday removing the cancerous cells in his kidney and a nodule on his liver.

He discussed a course of treatment with his doctors, the archdiocese said in a brief statement on its website.

George, a former president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and a conservative who has espoused strict views on homosexuality and abortion, is 75 years old and has led Chicago's archdiocese since 1997. He is a Chicago native.

He submitted his mandatory letter of resignation to Pope Benedict when he turned 75 in January, which normally is not accepted by the Vatican for a year or two, or longer.

George contracted polio as a teenager and walks with a pronounced limp.

The archdiocese said George will be resting at home over the weekend, and will be on a retreat next week.

All I can say is leave Father Pfleger where he is! He is doing a lot of good for the community in which he serves.

      I wish him well !!
Cancer is horrible and NOBODY, conservative or liberal, deserves to have that.

God's will is just dandy until you get sick, then you try to do everything in your power to try and thwart god's will. LOL No bigger hypocrite than a theist.

The Church has no problem with medical science do I'm confused by your remarks.

Funny how these god hustlers talk about their heavenly eutopia and their pal Jesus but do everything they can to avoid getting there. That is because they know what they do is nothing but a con job, selling lies to terrified death deniers.

A belief in Mother Goose will not save him.

He should be thrilled. Soon he will see Jesus. That should be the highlight of his life (if he really believes that nonsense he has been spewing for decades).

...and you are his dumb and loyal sheep...mindless creatures with no ability to reason.

It isn't nonsense and we will celebrate his new life should he die. On the other hand, he is a great shepard and we, here, would rather have him around a while longer.

The catholic church represents people like Mother Teresa that spent her life living in poverty to help children. Even the pope lives a simple meager life. He doesn't make trips and vacations to luxury resorts. The wealth the liberals claim the catholic chruch has isn't money either more of delusion. Liberals are perverts, jealous that they don't fit into gods plan. they sit on the side and criticize what they can't touch with moral values because they have a lack of.

Telestai - What you didn't mention is that the Pope does as much or more than anyone to promote the daily security of millions of Catholic, all while being stabbed in the back by his personal butler.

However, the Pope has a personal butler, his own state, service of every sort, access to incredible research resources, guards, rich regalia, transportation, health care, regular meals -- millions of Catholics do NOT have the daily security which the pontiff [and cardinals] enjoy. EVERY human, Brian, fits into God's plan, even haters such as you.

Brian is correct. The estate a Pope usually leaves would embarrass a successful plumber for its smallness.

Why is it Christians are sad when someone dies? Shouldn't they be giving each other high-fives in honor of their lucky friend/relative who get's immortality in the most wonderful place in existence?

Because deep down they know they live a lie.

What? Gawd must be calling him home! And yet he'll be using science to hold on just as long as he can.

Blind belief in supernatural magic helps only the god hustler when you put your money in his basket.

God is weighing-in on what this protector of pedophiles deserves.

The bishops and archbishops were co-conspirators in these crimes by failing to follow the law and report the crimes against children to the proper legal authorities, and instead, sweeping everything under the carpet (Joe Paterno style), with the grandiose notion that they could handle the situation quietly and internally. They found out they were wrong. They are guilty of a major case of hubris.

Why hanging on to life, quality of which is not good, when there is a haven awaiting him? Makes you wonder.

If I was the catholic church I would pull all charities out of the US. Tell the sick perverted liberals to get their free condoms from the church of entitlements

Certain apologists for the pedophile-protecting hierarchy seem to prefer the term "hebephilia", since this description deflects blame from the perpetrators to the victims by the subtle suggestion that the victims were mid-teen, post-pubescent children, and therefore more responsible for their own participation in this scurillous behavior. The fact is that priests prey upon younger and more vulnerable pre-teens who are less able to resist adult authority. Arguing that the situation represents hebephilia rather than true pedophilia is a coy way to suggest that these older teens were old enough to say no, and that "it takes two to tango" .

Sounds like it's time to retire. They need more young priests. Some that have'nt been tainted by the catholic church scandel.

Pedophilia is not a curable or even a treatable condition. The only reasonable approach to dealing with them, and with any members of the church hierarchy who choose to protect them, is to execute them.
