Hideo Kojima wants to make a Silent Hill game

Metal Fear Solid?

As is often noted, the Silent Hill franchise is looking a bit sickly nowadays. As is also often noted, this is kind of appropriate for a franchise which sets its (soiled, boarded up) store by existential paralysis and decay. But there comes a point when the irony of it all ceases to amuse, generally roundabouts the first time somebody writes about it on Twitter. Very clever, Konami. Now, if you could just see your way clear to recapturing the brilliance of Silent Hill 2...

A shot in the arm is needed, and who better to administer the morphine than noted survival horror developer Hideo Kojima? Earlier today, the Metal Gear Solid creator mulled over the prospect of a Silent Hill created using his studio's proprietary next generation engine. The one they're running Metal Gear Solid 5 on, yes.

"It would be a scary game if we make Silent Hill game on FOX engine," he began. "Silent Hill is in closed room setting and doesn't require full action so that we can focus on the graphic quality. Enemy doesn't have to be a lot or move fast. It only requires scariness by graphics and presentation.

"As being a creator making action game in open world, such game is very enviously attractive," Kojima continued, possibly after shooting his translator with a silenced pistol. "Wish someone could create this on FOX engine." Who, Kojima-san? WHO?

What do you think Kojima could achieve with a Silent Hill game? The last one wasn't half bad. Come to think of it, that screenshot up there sort of resembles a Virtual Reality Mission from MGS2.

  1. Personally i reckon it would be mint if Hideo did a SH game.Or even just like he says see one on the new Fox engine.Personally i hope they keep the series running whatever, despite losing its way a bit. There aren't really that many games that have been running for the same amount of time that haven't really.

  2. Only if he's involved in the same capacity as Castlevania Lords of Shadow. If he has free reign on this, I fear it will just make an already convoluted series even more confusing, and it probably wouldn't be all that scary. SWERY (writer of Deadly Premonition) would be a better choice, in my opinion.

    Someone wrote Deadly Premonition?

  4. Playing Deadly Premonition at the min. wouldn't say it was very scary.More a bit sick but then anything to do with serial killers could be classed as that.Think Hideo would maybe be able to write a good story for SH.He isn't a bad story teller after all.It definitley needs some kind of heavyweight input to get it back on track.

  5. I've not played a silent hill game, sacred blue...yes I know. Was going to get the hd collection but heard it's as buggy as a jar of bugs. Can anyone recommend a SH game on xbox?

  6. Yeah the SH :HD collection,as the european one isn't that buggy.Hence where the Americans get to trade it in if they want we don't.Hence the fact it was released about two months later over here.

Anyway i only get the odd sound glitch and all the games are pretty good especially the always rated SH 2.If a bit strange is your bag killing weird monsters and doing a fair bit of investigating would say all three would suit you.

If it hent that bad might give that a try then. Was downpour any good?

Also on a different note, seen Mr Channell has gone to eurogamer, that true?

If you want to check what he said it is in Rate the latest game you played in Gaming Discussion thread.

  9. Silent Hill definitely needs to go back to the Japanese. They understand horror in a way Western developers do not, and their skewed representation of small town American life veiled in horror was utterly captivating the first time around. The Western developers cheapened the mix, simply resorting to a 'more gore, more cheap scares' blueprint. I'd rate SH2 as the scariest of all the SH game snow, not just because of Pyramid Head but because of it's exploration of the psyche of the protagonist, and how the horror is a manifestation of his fears and his guilt rather than just "skinned dog" or "weird two headed baby thing". And also, the fact that the difference between Silent Hill and the alternate reality was not as pronounced, it gave the game a more 'otherworldly' feel overall. Even in SH3, which I'd rate as a good game overall, the streets of Silent Hill feel flat and airy in the short time you spend there, whereas the cold, grey mist of SH2 and the grainy filter made it look and feel incredible.

I've been playing the Silent Hill HD collection recently and musing on how good those games are (especially SH2, which funnily, wasn't my favourite back when it came out). I would love to see the series revived for this generation, or even better, a brand new survival horror IP. But if Kojima is going to oversee the project, it must be crafted with the careful, masterful hand that worked on MG: Solid and not any of the bloated rubbish that was passed off as Metal Gear stuff in later days.
