Dutch navy frees Somalis held by pirates: NATO

Dutch sailors taking part in NATO's pirate-busting operation Ocean Shield helped rescue the crew of a Somali dhow hijacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden, NATO said Tuesday.

In the operation early Monday, a Dutch navy transport vessel "disrupted a suspected pirate group before they could launch an attack on a merchant ship" from the hijacked dhow, NATO said in a statement.

Several suspects were arrested and the crew of the dhow is safe and sound, NATO said without elaborating.

The hijacked dhow had been in the sights of various vessels taking part in Ocean Shield including the Dutch transport vessel. The operation was led jointly with a unit from the European Union Naval Force's operation Atalanta, the statement said.

After a spike at the start of the last decade, successful pirate attacks on commercial vessels off the Horn of Africa have diminished.

Twenty-eight attacks were recorded in the first half of 2011, three in the second half and five since January, according to Atalanta statistics.

Pirates currently control seven ships with some 213 crew members aboard, compared with 20 ships and 550 sailors a year ago.

More than 1,000 pirates are awaiting trial or have been sentenced in 20 countries.

I'm an American merchant mariner who has sailed in those dangerous waters. My hat is off to the Dutch Navy for freeing innocent hostages and bringing pirates to justice.

@ fred by the company that insures the multi million dollar ships. It will void the insurance coverage, and lots a lot of uninsured ship and cargo to have to worry about. Don't agree with it but just FYI

Most merchant ships plying this route now pick up mercenary soldiers from all over Asia and the former USSR who provide protection for these ships. They are very unobtrusive, stay out of the way and professional soldiers. Quite a lot of Ukranians find employment as armed guards on these merchant ships. I met some in the southern port city of Galle in Sri Lanka sometime ago. Come with their own hardware. Why is this largely unknown in the media?

"Privately-owned merchant ships are forbidden by international law to carry firearms, even for use by the crew in self-defense. "
Forbidden by Who? Screw them, Arm every vessel, with small automatic
weapons and at least 20 mm cannon. Then blow all the pirates out of the water and
        stop this nonsense.
A whole world held hostage by a few "poor" people of Somali. They are nothing
but criminals. Mow them down and quit coddling them. No courts just kill them when
        they attack.
Send Marines to Somali and wipe out their camps. All western nations send
        several Destroyers to handle this.

Pirates should be hung by the neck and left hanging while the buzzards eat them. No mercy should be shown...

They should make them walk the plank far from land.

Hang these criminals in the centers of their villages and towns; that's the only thing these
animals will understand. Hanging for piracy has been the penalty for 500 years; why change
      a good thing?

Why bother trying anyone for piracy? If they see them, sink their ships, if they capture them, execute them and dump the bodies into the water for the sharks. Think of it as a green issue- healthier shark populations ;)

Why don't we just blockade their ports and search all incoming and outgoing boats?

Kill the pirates or they will survive to go back and do it again. The world is overpopulated, overcrowded and full of undesirable criminals and the more of them we execute, the better off we all are going to be.

Detaining pirates is such a waste of time. Fish have to eat too.
