Romney to Obama: ‘Take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago’

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio—Mitt Romney offered his strongest criticism yet of President Barack Obama's campaign tactics, accusing his Democratic opponent of resorting to "diversions and distractions" and "defaming others" in order to win re-election this November.

Speaking on the steps of a courthouse here on the final stop of his four-state bus tour, Romney lashed out at Obama, describing him as "intellectually exhausted, out of ideas and out of energy." As a result, Romney said, Obama and his allies are running a campaign based on personal attacks rather than "fresh ideas."

While he didn't mention him by name, Romney made reference to a Vice President Joe Biden's attack on his fiscal policies in a Virginia speech Tuesday when he said Romney would "put you back in chains" if elected.

"His campaign and his surrogates have made wild and reckless accusations that disgrace the office of the presidency," Romney said. "Another outrageous charge just came a few hours ago in Virginia. And the White House sinks a little bit lower. This is what an angry and desperate presidency looks like. President Obama knows better, promised better, and America deserves better."

Romney accused Obama of pushing Republicans and Democrats "as far apart as they can go" and he accused Obama of waging an even more divisive campaign by "dividing us all in groups."

"He demonizes some. He panders to others. His campaign strategy is to smash America apart and then cobble together 51 percent of the pieces. If an American president wins that way, we all lose," Romney said. "So, Mr. President, take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago, and let us get about rebuilding and reuniting America."

Asked for a response, Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt called Romney's claims hypocritical. "Gov. Romney's comments tonight seemed unhinged, and particularly strange coming at a time when he's pouring tens of millions of dollars into negative ads that are demonstrably false," LaBolt said.

Romney's speech sought to take direct aim at what has been one of Obama's strengths heading into the fall: his likability. Even as poll after poll has found voter dissatisfaction on the economy and on Obama's job performance, Obama has consistently trumped Romney when it comes to likability. A recent Gallup poll found 60 percent of those surveyed liked Obama, compared to just 30 percent for Romney.

But after a month in which negative attacks have taken a toll on Romney's poll numbers, Romney and his campaign have strongly pushed back—countering Obama's attacks with increasingly harsher attacks of their own.

While Romney used to couch his criticism of Obama's policies by telling voters that he believes Obama is a "nice guy," that line has been dropped and replaced with language bemoaning the absence of the "hope and change" candidate from 2008. The Romney pushback intensified after a pro-Obama super PAC released an ad last week essentially blaming Romney for the death of the wife of a steelworker laid off from a company owned by Romney's former firm, Bain Capital.

On Tuesday, Romney bemoaned Obama's political shift in stronger terms than he has ever before—casting himself as the uniter and Obama the divider.

"It wasn't supposed to be this way. His was supposed to be the campaign of hope and change," Romney told supporters here Tuesday. "This election is about restoring the promise of America. It's a choice between two visions for our nation's future. It's about the challenges America faces. It is about a better tomorrow and a better future. We don't need more excuses. We don't need more blame. We don't need more small-minded attacks. What we really need is a new president."

Voters, he said, "deserve an honest debate. And that's what Paul Ryan and I will give them."

Romney's speech here was perhaps his most elaborately staged speech yet. His campaign closed several streets in the city's historic downtown, hanging a massive American flag that was the width of a street to provide a backdrop for when Romney's campaign bus entered the event.

The GOP candidate spoke in front of the stately Corinthian columns of the county courthouse—where the campaign had hung three massive banners—including one that read "Victory in Ohio."

On stage, Romney largely stuck to the theme of his stump speech, diverting only to trash Obama's attacks. He urged supporters to turn out for the GOP ticket this fall.

"Paul Ryan and I believe in America—and in this election, we're offering Americans a clear and honest choice. Every single day we're going to do our part. And we need you to do yours," Romney said. "I ask you to commit like never before over the next 84 days. This election can come down to just one more vote. I ask you find that vote. ... One more vote can make the difference in Ohio. And Ohio will make the difference for America."

Great. I for one would like our election to be based on issues and solutions to our major problems. Number one is jobs. We know what we are doing is disappointing at best. What are the new and different ideas that will increase jobs? How do we protect our seniors by making medicare last more than 12 years? What are the competing plans? How do we save social security? What are the competing plans? How do we lower our national debt? what are our competing plans? How do we grow our economy better than1.5% GDP? what are the competing ideas. This should decide the election not nonsense issues.

Allen, I agree, jobs are the first priority. How can Americans get jobs when business is constantly outsourcing over seas, and allowing amnesty for hundreds and hundered and hundreds of illegal aliens domestically? Why aren't the stupid democrat followers of Obummer protesting THIS? Maybe they are so caught up in follow the leader, like the pied piper, they just don't look at the big picture and the consequences of allowing this jerk to continue as he has. The man is a #$%$ and I pray with everything in me that we send him packing in November. He knows he is in trouble because the only way he thinks he can win is a smear campaign. Meanwhile Obummer is continuing to destroy us while taking the focus off himself. The man is an IDIOT to the Nth degree, he has smart people advising him, and history will show this if we have a history with free speech in it, and it isn't too late! As much as Romeney is against using Obummer's tactics, he has to fight fire with fire. Let Romney go hunting for the skeletons in OWEBUMMER'S closet-he is the most secretive president we ever had and has paid a lot of money to hide his background? Why won't HIS record on college etc come out? If he has nothing to hide why is he and his wife no longer able to practice law? What happened with THIS? If they are pushing Romney for his tax records we should push Obummer for HIS college etc records. WHO IS HE to be able to say he will not disclose them?

Cindy, Obama went to that church for 20 years and lied about what he heard in the pastor's antisemitic sermons. He only left because he no longer lives in Chicago and distanced himself from the pastor for political reasons. If you want to question the religion of the man who wants to hold high office then why didn't you do it in 2008. All his associates from his favorite professors to his pastors are or were Marxists. I would rather have a Mormon who loves America and knows how to run businesses than a Far Left extremist who hates business and plans to bankrupt the country.

Cindy, Obama did not go to the National Day of Prayer, and he did attend the Muslim prayer events at the Capitol. Later on some liberal judge out of the 9th circuit court (California, where else!) said the National Day of Prayer is unconstitutional. Please get the facts right. It is constitutional because the National Day of Prayer is not telling you what religion's to pray for. You pray to your own God. When Obama attended the Muslim prayer event, people started to question weather he was a Christian or not. Obama also distanced himself from Jeremiah Wright, who preached nothing but hate. By the way Obama went to his church for 20 years!

News story writers most stop the interpretations of political speeches by Obama and Romney!!!!!!!!!!! The writers of news stories are ruining the campaign. Print the speaches
Of Obama and Romney and let the voters interpret the meaning of the candidates words.
Stand up people!!!!! Write that you do not want the news to interpret and try to manipulate your thoughts about the candidates.

The people that interpret what the candidates are saying are not authorities, psychologists, or mind readers.....they write to make money at the expensive if your freedom to think on your own.

People you must stand up and write, speak, post signs or do what ever you can to stop
The mind twisting tricks of manipulative money making writersand let the politicitians speak for themselves and interpret their opponents abilities.

OBOZO your stupid, there is no rational way to have an even intelligible conversation with you. All that can be said of your rhetoric is one, your a homophobe which generally means you are a closet gay/lesbian. Secondly you hate anyone different than you which means your a Republican, which means your pretty stupid however thats a fact we already know. Lastly, now this is my hunch you are inbred and perhaps live with your wife/first cousin? Just a guess but keep taking those meds buddy.

So how, exactly do you want to see the president's birth certificate other than online? Do you want them to mail it to you so you can hold it? Then you send it back? Open your mind and use your brain.

America are usually more united when we have a crisis, like 9/11. With this economy crisis, we are more divided than ever. What happened??? DON'T get used by the politicians!!!

To survive from a battle, a soldier is train to kill. To survive politically, a politician has to play politic. DONOT be naive and think your politician is god and others are devils. They are all the same and you can think of them as either gods or devils, but all the same.

Geno - do you really think that is the case? people on the other side think that's hogwash because in their rallies there are black people, Mexicans, Indians, Pakistanis, Iranians, Africans and just about every other race. Democrats think that the Aryan nation has infiltrated the tea party. Guess who is in the Democratic rallies? black people, Mexicans, Indians, Pakistanis, Iranians, Africans and just about every other race. You're right.... The definition of money and greed have two different definitions they mean different things to different parties. Democrats look at money as disposable, Republicans look at money as potential income. Democrats look at money as saved labor. Republicans look at money as power and return. Republicans don't understand Democrats because they don't understand money. Democrats don't understand Republicans because they don't understand money.... Get the picture..... the politician is always interested in your vote ... They do not really care about you. Democrats view their politicians as a helping hand and somebody that cares about their interest.... They don't. Republicans view politicians as a way to make more money.... The Republicans don't care about politicians - they are whipping posts. The only way this can be resolved and fixed is to clean up Congress, get rid of social programs that are enabling people to use it more and become dependent. Republicans need to fund more of the necessities, things they typically do for charities. We need to find a balance and balance can only be achieved at the negotiating table and not crammed down one or the other's neck. when was the last time you bullied somebody and got a positive response? it doesn't work....it's surprising to me that both parties are posturing and refusing to communicate with each other. it's discerning and insulting to use race in anything. As a white guy... What do I tell my group of diversified friends, the people I care about?

We need debates about substance, policies and the direction of this country. Let's make this about ideas and direction instead.
    • cow hunter  •  2 days 1 hr ago
I would say that the country is as divided as I have ever seen it in my 66 years, the Democrats hate the Republicans, the house hates the senate, the people hate the Government, the Government seems to hate America, the Blacks and Whites are more divided than ever before and the Mexican Citizens are getting a bad rap because of the Illegals, the poor hate the rich and I hate to turn on the news and hear about Politics - Rape - Murder - Child Pornography and so on and so on. And may God help us all.

What has happened to America? For those born after 1990, you have no frame of reference of knowing how great this nation was.

Politicians and magicians are very much alike. They are masters of distraction.
    • Tinkup  •  1 day 7 hrs ago
If we all actually discuss in a civil manner the real issues that face us, we actually might come to some agreement on the direction of this country instead of party affiliation. Dont the people we elect represent us all? We all want a thriving economy and low unemployment, we all want control of our lives and not in the hands of the govt, we all want a brighter future for our kids and grand kids. We all want our nation to be protected by the strongest and smartest military known to mankind. We all want our leaders to lead with honesty, put country first before their own personal agendas. We can agree on many things, debate how we get there without name calling....just try it for a change, honesty is the best policy for the solving of problems.

Divide and conquer and a campaign of distraction has worked on the American people for at least 50 years so why change now? The people expect nothing from their Politicians and they are getting plenty of it.

Love the attack on the attack ads. Come on. I hope both parties cut that and just go back to the mudslinging. Don't try to get on a pedestal and speak about how awesome you are and how crappy the other person is. Go after what you will DO and how you will do it. Not what you WANT or HOPE, what you can DO.

Unaffiliated and dang proud of it.
