Attacked Ill. woman finishes 1,500-mile boat trip

CHICAGO (AP) — Jenn Gibbons wanted to control her emotions when she rowed into Chicago, determined to complete her 1,500-mile trip around Lake Michigan despite being sexually assaulted aboard her boat in Michigan's Upper Peninsula nearly a month ago.

But when she saw her supporters waving and cheering from the shore Tuesday, including the cancer survivors for whom she was rowing, the toughness that pulled her through the waves and the emotions began to melt.

"I was smiling, then I was happy, then I started crying when I saw the team," she said, referring to Recovery on Water, or ROW, the rowing team she co-founded for breast cancer survivors that promotes exercise to reduce the chance of recurrence.

Dozens of supporters greeted the 27-year-old as she rowed into the harbor at the Chicago Yacht Club, blue skies and light winds welcoming her home. When asked about the assault, she said she felt no lingering bitterness and had full confidence in investigators looking for her attacker.

"I still believe that there are a lot more good people in the world than bad," she said, adding that she has been overwhelmed by the support she has received, including being given a Chicago flag by Mayor Rahm Emanuel. The mayor wrote on the flag, "You've got this," in honor of Gibbons' voyage motto.

The trip helped raise $113,000, which ROW volunteers said they hoped would help them raise awareness about the group and purchase more boats. The group includes 50 women ranging in age from their 30s to their 70s.

Gibbons came forward about her assault shortly after it happened on July 22, in part, she said, to help police find her attacker. She said she was sleeping alone in her boat on an isolated stretch of the Upper Peninsula when she was surprised and sexually assaulted by a man who had crept on board. Michigan State Police are still looking for the man, whom they suspect may have tracked her movements through her blog.

After the assault, alternate plans were made to ensure her safety in Michigan's more remote areas. Gibbons and a small group of supporters rode bicycles together for about 350 miles to Muskegon, Mich., where she was reunited with her boat for the remainder of the journey.

Gibbons acknowledged that she has a lot of healing ahead of her and said she hasn't fully come to terms with the prospect of becoming a spokeswoman for victims of sexual assault. She's considering writing a book to help in the process, noting the piles of notes she took during her trip.

"I've been an advocate for exercise and breast cancer for years, I feel very comfortable being that person. This is talking about something I don't necessarily know how to talk about yet," she said.

"It's really hard to share all of the really good things and all of the really bad things that happened because you open yourself up, and you are extremely vulnerable to what people are going to think about you," she added. "I have a lot of healing to do, a lot of things I need to dig into."

a rapist thinks his 5 minutes of pleasure are worth possibly ruining the rest of another person’s life, and those around them as well. You don’t accidently rape a person. You don’t rape a person without premeditation. It’s a planned act. I don’t say cut off their junk. I say shoot em. Let god sort them out.

electrify him to death with a cattle prod shoved into his rectum. should be the punishment for rape

Connor are you serious? Let's just say how sorry we feel for this poor rapist and treat him nice and fair maybe give him some counselling and a light prison sentence. Sound good Connor? Now imagine it's your 15 year old daughter! Douche bag

This is why Twitter and Facebook are bad. Nobody should know where you are and what your doing ALL the time. My sister kept a count down to her vacation on Facebook. Guess what? She was robbed. Duh! 400 "friends" get to see pics of your children and parents. Stop the insanity now!

Belgragahd, it is so sad that your sister had to learn the hard way, it is exactly because of this reason that i have never had a facebook or a twitter account-and i am only 22 years old. I had a myspace, for about a week, but i realized exactly that WAY before this became a major problem. On the internet, i have one simple but golden rule- remain anonymous.

Vanina, sure, the fault may not lie with the "tools", but it actually does partially because of the temptation. It's too easy to unintentionally "slip up" and post something that at first glance would seem rather mundane, but in reality-quite revealing. I personally do not suffer myself to these temptations because honestly, i cant trust myself in that regard. Nor should anyone else trust in the "system" as much as they do. These tools merely provide a means to enable the parasites. That is how they are at fault.

We should be able to post whatever we want and be safe. We should be able to walk down the street and be safe. But the facts are that we can't. So we take precautions. But there is nothing that is 100% safe. Precautions only go so far. You cannot be prepared for everything, especially an inbred Yupper stalker with a computer .

Anybody that posts his personal information on a message board deserves whatever happens. If you're that desperate for "friends" that you have to reveal your life and every move...

She is smiling because she has something great to smile about! What an incredible accomplishment. And she didn't let her assault cancel out her ultimate goal. I dont' know many people with that kind of inner strength. Good for her!

The only reason A would say anything of that nature is because somehow he justifies it,relates with it,or participates in that type of behavior.Only that kind of person,(completely disassociated with the feelings involved with the trauma that it causes)could make that kind of statement.Get help my friend,If you haven't already, you could be the next perpetrator of this type of crime.

I find it amazing that people are so trusting and give such little concern for their safety on their online blogs and facebook accounts. Provide oneself with time delays. Report your location 3 or 4 days later. Off set your location by miles. Hopefully she will recover and others will learn from her misfortune.

"Common Sense" is definitely the ultimate oxymoron these days. There are countless predators out there and posting every little fact of your life is just "chumming" the waters when a shark is close by. Everything that you do has consequences. Realizing that is the first step when you GROW UP.
      • Blackadder 1 hr 5 mins ago
She should have never revealed her location. There is a predator out there and this will happen again. Next time I hope he finds a 357 pointed at him or at least a 120 pound rottweiler on board.

Putting out too much information is how your house can get robbed too. You shouldn't tell people where you are on a public form or if you're going on vacation, etc.

It's too bad we live in this kind (evil) of world. I hope they catch the guy and put him in jail with a bunch of "friendly" inmates. In the future someone attempting a journey like this should probably ask for a support group for security at vulnerable stops, I'm sure there would be many who would volunteer for this type of support.

Good for her! Great story, but I hope the creep who assaulted her is found floating face-down in Lake Michigan.

My goodness. Can a woman go anywhere in this world without being a victim of rape? Congrats to her and all her accomplishments. I wish her peace and healing as she starts to deal with what has happened to her.

ms gibbons has proven to be a mentally strong individual by finishing the race. It is a sad state when a woman cannot even raise money for a cause without being assaulted by a creep.

Jenn, you are by far the most inspiring women ive read about latley. To be assaulted, and finish a cause you started for the sake of other people, tells me you are not selfish, strong, and very mature. My hat is off to you lady and will find your blog to suport your cause so i can donate. CHEERS
