Paul Ryan to Colorado supporters: I drive a truck. I used to work at McDonald’s. I like to camp. I’m you.

LAKEWOOD, Colo--Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan took the stage before 2,600 supporters at Lakewood High School Tuesday to promote Mitt Romney's energy proposals, but he had another agenda.

Interlaced throughout his speech were subtle, but clear, references to Ryan's common-man appeal. Over the course of his nearly 20-minute address, Ryan discussed working at McDonald's, shelling out more than $100 at the pump to fill up his gas tank, camping and fishing with his family, climbing the Colorado "14ers"--a reference to the state's mountain peaks above 14,000 feet--and that he recently taught his boys "how to cook a meal on the fire."

In short: I'm one of you.

First, Ryan let it be known that he drives a truck--a big truck--using the anecdote to knock President Barack Obama's record on energy.

"The last time I was filling my truck up, it cost 100 bucks," Ryan said. "The only reason it cost 100 bucks is because the pump cut me off at at 100 dollars. I didn't even fill the gas tank! Enough! We have our own oil and gas. We have nuclear. We have all of the above: Wind, solar, coal. Let's use it. Let's make us energy independent."

He also reminded the audience that growing up, he developed a work ethic through service  jobs.

"I don't know about you," Ryan told the spirited crowd that filled the high school's gymnasium, "but when I was growing up, you know, when I was flippin' burgers at McDonald's, when I was standing in front of that big Hobart machine washing dishes or waiting tables, I never thought of myself as stuck in some station in life. I thought to myself, I'm the American dream on a path and journey so that I can find happiness however I can find it myself."

The speech was part of the campaign roll-out of what he called the "the Romney-Ryan plan for a stronger middle class," which Ryan said would focus on eliminating federal environmental regulations, promoting domestic energy sources and reducing the national debt.

The vice presidential contender plans to hold a second rally Tuesday afternoon in Las Vegas before attending what campaign aides are describing as a private "finance meeting" with a small group of supporters at the Venetian Hotel.

Anthony people heard just fine...you know except for Faux News viewers. And for all you MORONS who think he wouldn't have anything if he hadn't been elected president. Senators, of which he was one, generally command a high 6 to 7 figure salary when leaving office.

According to National Journal, an overwhelming 58 percent of young voters list “jobs and the economy” as the most important issue for them in this election.

All we have to do is bring back manufacturing. I run my own construction company, and most of my work comes from factory workers. Probably 75% of my jobs. Everything I buy, I buy American. Even if it costs more, because in a way, one of my customers might be making the products I buy. And if they aren't involved in what I buy, some other guy in some other town is. And that guy in that other town is passing on "the buck" to some other contractor. Just think of all the supporting jobs a factory generates. The cleaning supplies they use, the parts to fix broken machines, the raw materials going in, the packaging used to ship stuff out. The list goes on and on. All of that stuff comes from...... OTHER FACTORIES. Buy American and support your neighbors! Please!

JPS. All government jobs. Big Boss Obama Buying votes. The only people buying that junk is Government, State and Local municipalities. At subsidized rates. G.M. claims to be turning a profit? HA. They owe us Billions sucker. The only people they employ are a bunch of Union Socialists. 11,300 workers? We could do that work with half as many people out here and produce a superior job. I run more Union Work than you would like to know. Better product, Half the cost. I EARN better wages too.

forgive me if i offend anyone but i work for an American factory , and their motto is to"save american jobs " and keeping "americans employed" but then the factory workers are majority UNDOCUMENTED NON ENGLISH SPEAKING INDIVIDUALS, i get paid and get treated the same as an undocumented worker , how the heck is that saving American jobs when only 3 workers including myself and the foreman were born on American soil, all companies in the US should be investigated and very stiff fines and penalties should be imposed on those who hire cheap immigrant labor

After AL passed a tough immigration law the tomato growers had a fit because they couldn't find anyone to pick them. At the same time many out of work people wanted to get the info they needed to get these jobs. In most cases no connection was made and both the growers and the many that wanted to work both lost out. It seems to me that it would have been simple enough for the unemployment offices to relay this info and put people to work. I can't put all the blame here on anyone but if I needed a job and found out work was available I would have found out where to go and who to talk to. If I were a grower instead of crying about my tomatoes in the hope the govt would save me I would have run ads in newspapers , on CL and put up flyers if necessary. After the upper midwest flooded in '93 I moved to MO and heard that there were no jobs. I had part time work in a week and a full time temp job within a month that turned into a regular full time job in three months. Within two years I was offered a high paying job working for the city. I'm not saying that times aren't tough right now but to say that the unskilled or even the skilled conservatives that are out of work wouldn't pick vegetables is moronic. With all the govt. handouts it looks a lot more like the unskilled libtards are the ones that don't really want to work.

Not true Sam - it's the government officials who do not enforce immigration laws, do not force all employers to verify citizenship of all workers and apply strict penalties on those that don't comply. Instead they ignore the laws and make it even easier for immigrants to come here illegally in the hopes they can buy votes for the future.

I think crow will be in short supply after Nov.......too many people will be eating it!
      • gabe 13 hrs ago
Pelican: I good sense tells me that you and Cliff will both be eating s**t off Ryan and Romneys plate come November. If Ryan did drive a truck I bet that since he became a Congressman. The Koch brothers would not like him to be seen as an ordinary everyday sort of guy. Be sure and have a nice wet apron to catch the slop coming out of your mouths come November.

No politician is like us until - social security income is considered for THEIR retirement and they have to buy private insurance like the rest of us. They may initially start down the same path but then lose sight of the common citizens plight.

Romney probably selected the only person of the many VP prospects that could make Romney's campaign "human". It is just too bad that Ryan is a social conservative, if the and Romney were more socially moderate I might vote their ticket.

Many of our U.S. congressmen also get hired by banks/financial companies etc. after they get out of office....often as a favor for pushing pro-big business/anti-regulatory bills which free companies to profiteer more aggressively and merge into giant mega-companies which must be bailed out by public tax dollars when they fail. We must strictly enforce anti-trust/ant-monopoly laws in the U.S.......Congressmen and women should be CUT OFF from outside wealth when they're in office and when they're out of office. Double their pay and retirement, but cut them off from ALL outside wealth/investments while IN office and when they're OUT of office. Then they'll work for the poor and middle-class majority in America again....and stop working for the rich/to increase their wealth when they get OUT of office. To be employed by their donors and bill-writing wealthy supporters.
    • Yahoo  •  8 hrs ago
You have to wonder if some of these congressmen and women are recruited by big business/the wealthy to get elected and then write and promote legislation serving their particuliar industry and then get compensated by these industries when they leave office with lucrative jobs/stock offers etc. Congress should have their pay and retirement increased and then be CUT OFF BY LAW from having any outside investments/wealth when their in office or after they're out of office. This will stop all incentive to serve the rich and they will serve the middle-class/poor again. To many jobs bleeding to Authoritarian Communist China to exploit powerless/VOTELESS Chinese labor, avoid U.S. taxes and pollute freely. Allowing all these congressmen to put all their money into a blind trust is not really a solution.....because most of them can assume that most of that blind trust is invested in banking, finance, tech, oil and other big industries.
