Minecraft Xbox 360 update: 4J talks Creative Mode, enchanting and Xbox 360 exclusive features

"Many weeks of work to do yet, so not out soon."

Sounds like there's a way to go till the next Minecraft Xbox 360 update, which will draw on features from Minecraft PC versions 1.8.2 and (possibly) 1.9. In a bid to stave off update withdrawal symptoms, we've been coasting up and down the Twitter feed of 4J Studios man Stuart Ross. Here be titbits, information lovers. Many, many titbits. Scrape them together, and you've got the semblance of a meal.

"We're working on the 1.8.2 update, and deciding what to bring forward from 1.9 and beyond," the official 4J account Tweeted this morning. "Many weeks of work to do yet, so not out soon."

Ross was on hand to field questions about the update's precise composition. First off, your existing Minecraft worlds won't be deleted when the next update goes live, but you'll have to start a new one if you want all the new structures, which may include treasure-filled Strongholds and mineral-laden Ravines.

Enchanting (which lets you add abilities such as knockback to weapons and armor) and breeding (which lets you generate smaller, big-headed versions of your favourite animals) are on the table, but won't necessarily make the final cut. Those mysterious commodities known as Ender Pearls are in, but you won't be able to use them to teleport, as in the current PC release.

No-respawns-allowed Hardcore Mode won't be among the features leeched from Minecraft PC 1.9. As regards the much-anticipated Creative Mode, 4J is working on an interface which best suits the Xbox 360 pad.

"We haven't decided what the Creative menu will be like, but it probably won't be like the 1.8 one with the large scrolling menu," Ross noted. "It will be something that isn't too cumbersome to use with a controller."

Finally, not everything the next update adds will be already-known PC material. "There may be some new features in the next update...but you might not notice ;) There will probably be more unique things in the future, yes."

They've got their work cut out for them, clearly. 4J reckons this particular Minecraft Xbox 360 update will be "the most difficult". The recent Minecraft Xbox 360 update 1.7.3 was comparatively unambitious, but still resulted in some significant bugs.

Here are 10 things to do in Minecraft, eight astonishing piston-powered creations and eight forthcoming features that will totally change the game.

  1. As was the fear then you will have to start again to implement all the new features.Couldn't see how they could do anything different to be fair.Should still be fantastic and really open the game up a lot more.Although not out soon sounds a bit daunting, here's hoping it's before christmas, lol.

  2. I was kind of hoping that you could get these new structures within your old world, by 4J expanding the world area and these new features being generated in the new parts of the world. I would of thought this would of been a far better solution than me having to create a new world every time a new update comes, and ending up back at square one.
Not too happy about this at this moment as much of my creations will now go ignored in a world that I will probably never use again.

Yeah but that would mean all the new stuff underground would only be on one area of the map.Instead of randomly generated all over the place like normal.Would have made it a bit crap i reckon limiting all the new stuff to one area.Plus i can't see a lot after this update messing things up to the extent of starting again.I personally don't mind starting again as it should give you a lot more variety as well as stuff to build with. :D

  4. Think I'll stop playing on my world in the time being then if I have start again anyway. I was building a pool with a sticky piston door at the bottom, that goes to a secret underground garden.

  5. I don't mind starting new. However, I will hold off my thoughts of building the huge city I have in mind until after this update.

  6. Can't wait for creative, my new hobby on the PC version is spawning a bunch of cows and enchanting an insane bow and 360 one-shoting all of them. Like a boss.

  7. Shame about the new world thing, but it is the only thing they can realistically do. Really hope they bring jungles into the world, and the sooner the food stacks the better, but hoping that hunger is one thing that won't cross to Xbox....
