Republican Voters React to Paul Ryan Pick

Now that Mitt Romney has tapped Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his vice-presidential running mate, how do Republican voters across the nation feel? Yahoo! News asked some GOP voters to react Saturday morning. Here are excerpts from perspectives their shared.

"Ryan is particularly appealing because, as chairman of the House Budget Committee, he has actually attempted to address the great crisis of our age, the out-of-control budget deficit and the economic malaise that grips the country still after four years. He is also a wonderful pick because he will drive the left thoroughly insane. By picking Ryan, Romney is also picking Ryan's vision of a reformed federal budget, one that begins to pay down the debt and not pad it. I find this exhilarating." -- Mark Whittington, Texas

"Ryan is young, handsome and his family looks like it was ripped straight out of a photo frame on a store shelf. The Republican ticket needed that youthful conservative voice, a "let's cut the budget deficit" mentality and government reform ideas to make America better. Paul Ryan seems to be this person." -- Sophie Walton, South Carolina

"This choice unquestionably unites the right and the tea party, providing Romney with a strong base to work from. But is that base going to be big enough in the key swing states necessary for the Republicans to take the White House this November? Will seniors in Florida embrace Ryan, who is often painted by Democrats as a enemy of Medicare? Will the unions in Ohio be weary of him given his association with Gov. Scott Walker in his home state of Wisconsin? Will Pennsylvanians see his stance as an opponent of abortion as anti-women? Will Colorado residents interpret his position on gay marriage as draconian?" -- Robert Watkins, Pennsylvania

"Mitt Romney's campaign has kind of stalled. So this choice seems well-timed. The more fiscally conservative Republicans, and those who qualify as moderate conservatives, have been decidedly lukewarm on Romney. For the far right, he's not a tea party candidate. For those in the middle, his record as a governor is questionable. So, how does Mitt Romney fix this? For this voter, that's by choosing the Paul Ryan." -- Randy Childers, Michigan

“What Ryan said on Saturday morning resonated with me: ‘We promise equal opportunity, not equal outcome.’ I've never believed that the United States government owes me. Paul Ryan came from a background in which he had to work hard his entire life. His father passed when he was a teenager. He likely understands what it is like to sacrifice, live frugally and behave responsibly. As a GOP voter, I find this very appealing.” -- Emilia Zs Rak, Texas

"I feel Ryan's background -- with his budget proposals -- will really help Romney gain more support, especially among the more fiscally conservative groups, such as the tea party. Ryan would make much needed cuts to entitlement programs, such as welfare, which is desperately needed. We need to remind Americans that government handouts are not the answer. This election will be about whether the country is better off now than four years ago economically, and Ryan will prove to the American people that Obama is not the answer." -- Jeanne Rose, Ohio

Four years ago there were some ecstatic right wingers (think Richard Vigery) over the Sarah Palin pick too. Doesn't matter what the righties think, it's the independents that will decide.
    • bushwacked  •  7 hrs ago
If Ron Paul were to run as an independent now, the Republicans would make him a very weathy man to stay out.

The great 18th-century philosopher Edmund Burke observed, "The people never give up their liberties but under some delusion." Indeed, that delusion is dependent on erasing the knowledge of the past, as 20th-century philosopher George Santayana concluded, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Of course, any honest telling of history must note that the German party led by Adolf Hitler was the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP), which evolved into the Nazi (Nationalsozialisten -- National Socialists) Party. (This would explain why the second volume of Hitler's Mein Kampf is entitled "The National Socialist Movement.")

Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's Reich Minister of Propaganda, wrote that Nazi ideology incorporated Nationalism and Socialism in order to distinguish "the Internationalism of Marxism with the nationalism of German Socialism." The rest is a very bloody history, and one subject to recurrence.

No matter whether it is Marxist Socialism, Nationalist Socialism or the most recent incarnation of this beast, Democratic Socialism, the terminus of Socialism has been, and will always be, tyranny.

Sounds like Ryan should have been the one to run for the Presidency. He has more going for him than Romney...and I'm a Democrat.

L, you are a good wise and patient woman (at least I presume you're a woman?), but I'm afraid you're wasting your time and energy on Aleksey.
These overzealous rightwing blockheads have locked and shuttered minds.
They are incapable of being objective, devoid of logic and reason, and utterly lacking in critical thinking ability. They only seek out sources of 'information' that reinforce their tilted ideology, no matter how obviously biased these sources are to a discriminating person, rejecting anyone and anything that challenges their narrow worldview. They obnoxiously and obsessively sermonize under the guise of 'debate', which has as much to do with reinforcing their views for themselves and proving their supposed intellectual superiority, as it has to do with trying to convert the 'opposition', which is itself a form of reinforcement. They believe they are infallibly "right", and nothing that contradicts that can penetrate their closed minds.

Aleksey, you epitomize what I described some 30 odd posts back, "a knee-jerk partisan easily manipulated by propaganda", and a particularly stubborn zealous and obsessive one at that.

If you are now expecting to reengage me with your obsessive over zealous sermonizing, let me also remind you of this: "Your command of the language is weak to say the least. No offense, but your posts are confusing, marginally literate and barely comprehensible. Because of that and your primitive understanding of American politics, I am not interested in further discussion with you."

As a life Long Republican, I think we have picked a dud for a V.P. choice. After 13 years on the Hill Paul Ryan, has only had two bills passed. One to change the name of a post office and the other to change the taxes on Arrows. (As in Bow and Arrows)
This guy is completely ineffective as a Congressman. Why would Mitt Romney pick someone with a record like this?
America don't need fluff at a time like this and right now I am looking at a Fluff Candidate. What is the matter with you people? Even Ryan's Budget is Dead On Arrival. Many of our own Party think that bill is Garbage and don't want anything to do with it. You are treated like idiots: "Look at the pretty family; it is like out of a picture frame." Really? Is that all it takes to grab and keep your attention? The Republican Party is a party of idiots. Many of us want a whole lot more than what we are offered.

This will bring the discussions back to economy - Ryan's plan VS. Obama's policy. Now people have the detail to pick their next president if they think economy is most important for this election.

American Patriot, I am absolutely not stupid. I'm also not disrespectful to others, you and DB should try that. Fellas, you may recall that when Democrats tried having public forums to discuss health care, the Tea Party and other Obama haters wouldn't even allow a dialog to be started. They shouted down Reps and Senators and then Republican leaders stonewalled the whole thing. That was in the first 2 years.. and it was pretty much the only thing Obama was able to get through Congress, other than the tax cuts for the middle class, which I BET you benefit from. The country also happened to be reeling from the economic crash which happened BEFORE Obama took office. It happens to be a fact that health care costs were out of control for over 10 years (Bush's term) and rising so fast that bankruptcies and other calamities were directly connected to it. So, health care reform was absolutely a component of economic reform. How about you tell ME what policies of Obama's are causing all the trouble.

LOL! Anyways, that hypocrite belongs on that ticket with the crooked venture capitalist. He is no reformist. He is just another etch-a-sketch ready to be shaken.

Spending cuts will do NOTHING if not paired with a job creation program. We need to reverse the tax cuts the wealthy have enjoyed for 30 years given to create jobs. Our corporations have more cash than ever in history but refuse to hire Americans. More tax cuts won't do it. Cuts lay people off so that's not going to get the economy moving. We must create credits for net job creation to get people off welfare, end the need for "stimulus" spending and have the tax basis to pay down this mountain of debt. We also can't war our way out of debt like the weapons manufacturers funding the GOP would like.

      OBAMA AT MASTER LOCK CO.
When Obama stopped in at Master Lock in Milwaukee Wisconsin a few weeks ago, he was walking the plant and stopped to talk with a plant employee.
He looked up at the banner hanging on the wall and said to the workers and people around him, "It is great to be in a union shop, especially one as old as this union is " - - -- pointing to the banner. He then said, "A union shop since 1848" - - - and then he went on to talk about what that Banner stood for and how important it was to display it and show your union support.

The worker then said to Obama that it was the flag of the State of Wisconsin - - which was founded in 1848!

This was reported by only one local Wisconsin radio station...seems that the All Barrack Channel, Needmore Barrack Channel, Continous Barrack Station and the Communist News Network didn't want to embarrass their leader.
