Perception Is A Deception; The Standards of the World
In Hollywood, and still in present day entertainment, the name and cultured stlyes have to fit what the public thinks is acceptable or the chances of their success will be lessened. Ask John Wayne, Gary Cooper or Marilyn Monroe. Talk to O.D.B., or Jay Zee or Lil Wayne,India Arii or Sade.
As I constantly read articles on how we dress,what we wear or whom we interact with and where we are seen, I noticed a constant threat.
To present ones self as anything having to do with the African image or the independent person who sees the world as 'a place of individuality', like the celebrity entertainer ,or even having a certain name is noted as 'No-No'. Simply put, if you want to be remembered, you must fit the image of what the world will accept no matter what you have to offer.
Recently, I browsed an article on what not to wear to get hired. In this I spied that dreadlocks or beaded hair dos are definitely a way to 'not' get the job. In the article about the four year old whose dad, a hairdresser, sent her for school on picture day in a "Lady GaGa" worn do but, was told her do was a don't, the guidelines of that dresscode also dispelled any do that was braided or beaded.
Now,I do find there are some dressings and hair dos that draw the wrong image of what you represent however, when we still pick a person 'out' because of the perception of not fitting the criteria for a place of a certain standard image, we also disenfranchise many or make them become whom we want to be in the presence of.
Dressing appropriate is fine but, what is appropriate to represent that you are an individual seeking to be noticed among drones. Wearing stilettos to a job interview or not putting on the belt to hold up your pants or a lowcut blouse or colorful clothing will draw the wrong conclusion and keep one from being employable or accepted in certain places. Our resumes are only a small part of getting the point across that we are individuals with different desires with like ideas. Even a name can get you labled out of a job. While we all name our children at birth, we don't think of it as what kept them from being left out or not considered because of it. A potential employer will not hire the person named "Shante or Marquita because those names say they are from the 'hood'. A Mark or Joann will be called back but a 'Jamia or Quavias" ,well no more needs to be said when the person reading/scanning the potentials for a position has been programmed to believe they would 'just not fit into our needs', even though the rest of that resume says they do qualify.
As we all know, the dreadlocks will make one assume you are a weed smoker, and the braids and beads are indiginous of African American hair stlyes, it is still in the mind set of misgivens of information and prejudices to be mislead by our outward appearances ,be it in a name or hair or clothing stlye. More and more African Americans will purchase hair straightening products just to 'fit in' and spend countless dollars buying hair and even use a psuedo name to assimilate or they to will be seperated from the worlds business and opportunities to improve and provide for life needs.
I do know it is harming the fabric of this countries foundation when we choose to perjudge a person by these factors. Too many dont get the part because of what their parents named them or their choice to dress in a manner comfortaly representing their individuality. Our perception of what is behind the hair, name or clothing is usually very wrong thus, many are finding life difficult for no other reason than it.
It is time we judge by the character, who can get the job done and not be decieved by assuming the eyes know it all.
As i read these constant droning negative comments about the president of the united states being all the negative explicits your god-fearing minds can come up with, it is clear who is truely evil. When we were a nation under the stench of mr. Bush, he disguised himself as the good guy by always declaring others as 'evil doers'. As it is clearer, people who call others negative names are pointing out their own faults.
