Senior U.S. Soldier Killed By Suicide Bomber in Afghanistan

What do you feel about this article?

A senior U.S. Army soldier was killed along with a couple of majors by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan, and three special forces soldiers were gunned down by an Afghan commander who had won their trust and invited them to dinner.

The suicide bomber struck Wednesday as a group of U.S. military and civilian officials from the 4th brigade, 4th Infantry Division were in Sarkowi in Kunar Province, which is located in eastern Afghanistan. The suicide attacker detonated an explosive vest near the group.

Killed in the attack were Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin J. Griffin, 45, of Laramie, Wyo., the brigade's senior enlisted soldier. As a command sergeant major, Griffin was one of the brigade's senior leaders and provided leadership and guidance to the 4,000 man brigade.

Also killed in the blast were Army Maj. Thomas E. Kennedy, 35, of West Point, N.Y., and Air Force Major Walter D. Gray, 38, of Conyers, Ga. Gray was an air liaison officer and flight commander attached to the brigade.

The brigade is tasked with providing security in three provinces that border Pakistan. Based in Fort Carson, Colo., the brigade arrived in Afghanistan this past April.

The explosion also killed American USAID Foreign Service Officer Ragaei Abdelfattah. Another American foreign service officer and an Afghan civilian were also injured in the attack.

In a statement released Thursday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praised Abdelfattah's work in eastern Afghanistan over the last year as "critical to our efforts to support Afghanistan's political, economic and security transitions and was an example of the highest standards of service." She said he was so committed to his mission that he had volunteered to serve a second year-long tour in Afghanistan.

The second incident was described by Afghan officials as a clear case of infiltration where a Taliban operative joined the Afghan army, climbed its ranks, and earned the trust of his U.S. counterparts – only to kill them when the opportunity arose.

Afghan sources say the three killed service members were U.S. special forces who had been invited to dinner today in a small village of Mosa Qala, in southern Afghanistan.

The troops had been in touch with a local Afghan commander named Asadullah, trusting him enough to accept the invitation. During the dinner, in which Afghan local police were present, Asadullah opened fire, killing three soldiers and injuring one. He then escaped and joined the Taliban, who quickly boasted of the mission's success.

NATO officials did not provide details on today's incident.

In an earlier version of this story, ABC News incorrectly reported that the commander of the 4th Brigade was seriously wounded in the suicide bombing. The commander was not injured.

I have never been one to protest, but I am ready to march in the streets to get our troops out of there NOW. We could stay there 100 years and nothing would change.

Rod - If they got that message would we have the Ft. Hood killings? It is constant vigilance that has stopped many acts of terror before they could be carried out. Not all of them make the papers but they did happen. There will be more for such is the world in which we live. Do I live in fear? No. I refuse to let that happen.

Jones. actually I have never believed any of the #$%$ the government tells us. I live with Vietnam veterans the first 18 years of my life. I listened a great deal to what they had to say. I went to Iraq to try and make sure that all of my buddies came home. As a medic there was no way that I was going to let those kids go it alone. Not all made it though.
Thank's for your service BTW. I was drunk and stoned during the year of Desert Shield/desert Storm.

There is no winning a war in Afghanistan. What are we fighting for over there? What do we expect to accomplish? No matter how long we are there....the Taliban will be there longer. Bring our boys home. There is no reason for them to stay.

Tom, it must be sad to live in such fear. You apparently don't realize that the people of Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. The people who attacked us were a small number of criminals (Saudi and Egyptian nationals). They had built themselves a few compounds in Afghanistan. But with money you will probably find most countries would let you buy land and build compounds. Afghanistan's government has been destroyed for allowing the criminals to operate in its borders. But your argument that we need to kill "them" there (the middle east) before "they" bring the war here. Indicates that you, like many of my fellow Americans, don't know who we should be fighting. The responsible criminals have already been captured, killed or are on the run. The law enforcement agencies should be handling this. So far 6,472 of my Brothers and Sisters in Arms have have lost their lives. Enough is enough. Let's bring them home.

Chad....so how long do you want to serve over there? I'm from the Nam era too...and I don't remember any good that came out of starting that war or staying there. Too many young men served and died in Viet Nam....and too many have served and died in Afghanistan. Lets avoid the mistakes of the past and bring our boys home.

Boy, is that "you can't win a war in Afghanistan" #$%$ ever getting old... Seems like the Afghanis can. If politicians from the other side let them. Kind of like Viet Nam...

@SFCP - Thank you for your service. It is real men like you that will bring our country back to being a world leader rather than a laughing stock, like Obama has done. And you will make more change than all the whiners in this blog because you do not hold anyone else responsible for happenings, past or present, than the real perpetrators. You have put a bright spot in my day.

And Iraq is in such wonderful shape! Pull out for political reasons before the military job is done and you leave a country in total disarray. The Taliban are quickly taking over the country as they have no opposition and killing every one in sight.

Read the book Lone Survivor. It's a true story about a group of Navy Seals that made a choice during a mission and based their choice on politics and the spin the press would put on it. They lost 3 out of 4 Seals on that mission because of that choice. This was is being fought by politicians and bussiness men here in the US and being lost by the soldiers and their families doing our so called leaders dirty work.

It's called protracted warfare. That is where the enemy is determined to do whatever is necessary to win the fight even if it takes a century to complete the mission and loss of life is irrelevant. This type of warfare can only be effective in wars like this where there is no clearly defined goal stated by the US. Don't blame the troops as they are doing everything possible and more in order to serve their country. The blame sits squarely on the president and congress who initiated this action. Anyone who studied Vietnam knows how this works and exactly why we lost the war in Vietnam even though we won every major battle and most of the minor battles. We lost 50,000 men while the Vietnamese lost over 10 times that amount. And yet we still lost that war. Simply stated in every book written on the subject of war. You win the war when the enemy no longer has the will to continue the fight. Should America be willing to send our youth to that horrible place to die for the next century if needed? If the answer is yes then we must bring back the draft. The consequences of this warfare must be shared by all. My humble suggestion, let's do two things - Bring back our troops and never make this mistake again.

Noon - i'm not overly familiar with what punishments are handed out thru the military ranks, but...and this is just a guess, but i'd imagine a soldier refusing to do his service, especially when active, would probably get them in a 'bit' of trouble. Additionally, i'd bet a large portion of them did what their 'real hearts and minds' told them to do when they enlisted. The soldiers I do know would probably be distgusted at your suggestion. But, other than the part of your post where you put letters and words, that was well said.
    • Rod 1 day 22 hours ago
Rich, there is no doubt that re-instituting the draft would effectively bring our incongruous foreign policy directly into the forefront of discussion of every American. Currently on the plate: Syria then Iran. Yes, things will be so much more stable with fundamental extremists "democratically" coming into power in these states. Wait, how is this to our benefit?

Teejai, thanks for your service, but I disagree. We all have a stake in what is done in our name by the U.S. gov and military. So we all must exercise earnest effort to understand if our government and military are on the right path. Idiots flapping their mouths don't count.

please get all of the troops out of there NOW..just leave. They do not want us there. What if it were the other way around and they came here and never left?

They used these exact tactics against the Russians and every other invader for the past 3000 years. It has always worked for them to eventually push the invaders out. This is an unwinnable war with an ungreatful people. We need to follow Russia's example and pack up before it gets any worse. The past 10 years has been for nothing at a cost of so many American lives. Leave now and let Pakistan deal with the new reality of their region !

I would love to hear from someone who has BEEN THERE to know if the common people actually want the "change" that our soldiers are bringing. Because if not then we need to get the heck out of there!
  • Phil  •  Longmont, Colorado  •  2 days 9 hours ago
Let's declare victory, pack up and get the heck out of there. We don't need to sacrifice any more of our best and brightest in that hell-hole.

Why are we still there?? That hell hole is not worth one American life.
  • nobodyslave  •  Sunnyvale, California  •  2 days 8 hours ago
I say, get our troops out of there. Let them handle it their way like they have for the past 250 years and they can kill themselves off and we can re-build America and take care of our own people.
  • Seapath  •  2 days 8 hours ago
Get out now. This is a pointless war that cannot be won. Even if we won, how could you tell? It is a waste of American lives.

I say we claim victory and bring the boys home. This man was too good to be lost to such a hell hole, that will always be a hell hole and whose occupants are working to keep it a hell hole.

"During the dinner, in which Afghan local police were present, Asadullah opened fire, killing three soldiers and injuring one. He then escaped and joined the Taliban, who quickly boasted of the mission's success."

Local police were present but he was able to shoot three people dead and escape?? Did they fire their weapons at him? Or did they just sit there?? Maybe we need to direct our soldiers to not fraternize with local anybody.

Article says he was "a Taliban operative" who "joined the Afghan army, climbed its ranks, and earned the trust of his U.S. counterparts – only to kill them when the opportunity arose."
If this was a novel, the plot wouldn't be very believable. How long did it take him to "climb the ranks"? If he was able to climb the ranks to commander, wouldn't he have been more valuable in that role, privy perhaps to classified information more useful to the Taliban than three dead soldiers? No one in his army knew of his Taliban connection?

I pray for our soldiers. We've got them in the "new" Vietnam situation -- fighting an enemy who looks just like the civilians. Who can they trust? The very people they're trying to help are the ones killing them.
