4 Things You Didn't Know About Orgasms

The Best Ones Hold Their Thrill Longer than a Werther's Original Butterscotch

Sex researchers Masters and Johnson labeled "intense orgasms" (like the kind where Sally's not faking it) as involving 8 to 12 vaginal contractions, each lasting 4.0 to 9.6 seconds. That adds up to over two minutes of continuous mind-bending bliss.

They're Even More Elusive than You Thought

Not even scientists can agree on what percentage of women regularly climax, or how or even why. But it's generally accepted that roughly a third of women are unable to have orgasm through any means, says Cindy M. Meston, PhD, who was the chair of the World Health Organization's 2005 orgasm committee (yes, there was such a thing). Recent research has confirmed that anatomy plays a role: Some women are just born to orgasm--and some have to work at it. A study published last year in the journal Hormones and Behavior confirmed that the shorter the distance between a woman's clitoris and vagina (less than 2.5 centimeters is ideal), the easier it is for her partner to stimulate her supersensitive areas (tools and toys can help bridge the gap). Regardless of how we're built, almost every woman is aware of the other big challenge: Orgasms tend to require more constant attention--about 20 minutes, studies show--than most busy people have the time or concentration for.

...But They Can Also Hit When You Least Expect Them

Working out at the gym? Sleeping on an airplane? Giving birth? Women (perhaps even you!) have reported experiencing orgasms in all of these unconventional situations. This has nothing to do with subconscious fantasies: Spontaneous, non-sexual orgasms can be caused by increased blood flow to the genitals combined with vibration or contact with the clitoris (during labor, there are also massive surges of ecstasy-inducing hormones like prolactin, oxytocin and beta-endorphins). Exercise-induced orgasms, in particular, seem to have been the gym addict's best-kept secret, until a study late last year by human sexuality researchers at Indiana University revealed that about a quarter of the 530 women they interviewed had climaxed while working on their abdominals, riding a bike or lifting weights.

Some will Knock You Out; Others Will Just Chill You Out

Research has shown that orgasms experienced during sex cause us to release 400 times more prolactin--which tends to make people feel sleepy and satiated--than from those from masturbation, writes Meston in Why Women Have Sex, a book she co-authored with psychologist David M. Buss. This is why women may still feel alert enough to write a status report or clean the bathroom mirrors after a self-induced pleasure session. It all makes evolutionary sense, say the authors, because post-sex sleepiness helps women lie still, which is the optimal position for conception.

"Some will knock you out"-that happened once with my husband. I mean I literally blacked out for a couple of seconds. Freaked him out! But when I came to it felt like it was still happening. I literally could not speak. Awesome!

My apologies Angie, in no way did I mean to offend, and forget your body, the type you describe receiving anal is exactly descriptive of what I have experienced vaginally. Of course none of my business but according to your last comment you have never received the script as you describe vaginally. This just confirms my original comment that the vast majority have not. Again Angie, I am not trying to argue, maybe just an education for all of us, and you have a wonderful day yourself.

Actually I do know the difference. I even know the difference between a clitoral orgasm & a vaginal orgasm. I have both on a regular basis. What I was describing above was something else. For one it was during anal sex (sorry didn't want to go into that much detail earlier) I blacked out, completely collapsed & when I came to my entire body was still convulsing. It was different than having multiple orgasms. It was even different than having concentric multiple orgasms which are what I'm assuming your describing. But thank you for assuming that you know more about my body & sexual satisfaction &/or gratification. I apologize if my description wasn't thorough enough or graphic enough for you. Have a nice day.

Angie, this is a true category I have lightly spoke of on here before, though only so much will go through. What you describe is a true full blown orgasm, which from the common descriptions received from commenter's, and even writers 99.9% have never had one. Despite being extremely exhausting, You, every woman, should have one as this every time. For the man they are not to difficult to deliver with true trust, the proper hand, and mouth work in foreplay, then the proper fluid movement, added with stamina during penetration. Sad Angie that You have only had one, you should receive this level, every time, (minus quickies).

I must be one of the lucky women. I've never had a problem having multiple orgasms. I've never had a non-sexual one but I got close once while on a roller coaster.

My wife likes the Missy Elliot line "Sex me so good I go "blah, blah, blah". She said it's like a reset button for her brain and she falls asleep as quick as I do afterwards.

An orgasm while GIVING BIRTH?? Wow. That is the only time in my entire life I wished I couldn't feel the lower half of my body, and some women are having freaking orgasms. The thought of having an orgasm while my child is coming out of my vagina is quite disturbing!

Ladies you are so damn out of touch with you body it's a wonder you have had sex at all.
      • Dantesque Adhortation 1 day 14 hours ago
Disturbing yes Nana, though theoretically, that's how your child got there in the first place. I know what you mean though.

20 minutes is more than most people have the time or concentration for? No wonder so many people have so many sexual problems. In our house a good session usually lasts from one to two hours - at the end of which I'm exhausted and she's wide awake, having had anywhere from one to six climaxes, usually about three, before and during the act itself.

Women that pad or stuff their bras are the same as guys that lie about their jobs. A woman with an A cup that presents herself as a C or D cup, is like a guy saying he's a doctor, when he really flips hamburgers or is unemployed.
