    • What Does a 1,200-Calorie Day Look Like?
By Kerri-Ann Jennings, M.S., R.D., Associate Nutrition Editor, EatingWell Magazine

Losing weight is about calories in versus calories out. To lose weight, you need to eat fewer calories than you burn each day through exercise and general living. How much you need to eat each day varies based on your height, weight and activity level. (Find out how many calories you should be eating each day for weight loss by using this formula: [Your weight x 12] - 500 = Your daily calorie goal.) But most people will lose weight on a 1,200-calorie diet, which is also the lowest you really can go calorie-wise each day while still getting all the nutrients you need.

So what does a 1,200-calorie day look like?

Steely biceps, toned calves, and flat stomachs were all praised during the Olympic Games over the past couple weeks. But when a group of supermodels, including Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Georgia May Jagger, and David Grandy, walked for the Closing Ceremony, their svelte figures caused an uproar. On Twitter and Facebook, viewers complained that such thin people don't have "real" bodies, so the finale was counterproductive to the positive image the muscly athletes had set.

But after spending two weeks in a state of stunned awe over Michael Phelps's torso and Allyson Felix's legs, the last word I would use to describe an Olympic athlete is "real" or "normal." "Real" would be me, or any of my friends, who go to the gym (on occasion) and try to eat a reasonably balanced diet. But we don't dedicate our lives to fine-tuning our bodies. While Jourdan Dunn's rail-thin frame isn't average, neither

      Your health matters too!

Scary new research out of the University of Missouri: Scientists have discovered that young women are more interested in how they look over how healthy they are.

      By Korin Miller

Researchers conducted several focus groups of college-aged women and discovered that they paid more attention to calorie counting instead of making sure that they ate a balanced diet. As a result, they're not always getting the nutrition that they need.

What's up with that? Nutritionists say that a lack of time to prepare a good meal and unhealthy food environments are to blame. They also said that a lot of women might not know how to make a healthy meal, either.

Sure, we know it can be tough to eat healthy sometimes-especially when you don't have much time to cook-but it's important to take care of yourself. Try these little tricks to add more nutrition to your diet when you're in a bind.

Mistakes have been made. Maybe you did that weird cabbage soup business for a few weeks and went right back to your favorite carbs the month after. Or perhaps you were super into that raw food thing for awhile until you smelled some mac and cheese. For years we've all heard that yo-yo dieting is the biggest enemy of permanent weight loss, causing your body to hoard its fat and making it harder to lose weight the next time.

    • Like anorexics, fitness obsessives can't seem to stop. Tatiana Boncompagni on why more women than ever are going on workout benders, pushing themselves to dangerous limits. By Tatiana Boncompagni

Women are pushing themselves more-and-more to dangerous levels while exercising.

Celebrities do it all the time: In anticipation of a film or event, they whip post-baby bodies into top shape by training like madwomen - lunging, squatting, and tricep-dipping their way back into the size-00 kingdom of heaven.

The good news for the rest of us: a) We aren't endlessly scrutinized by paparazzi, and b) it doesn't actually take that kind of high-intensity training to reach peak form. In fact, most experts agree that by pushing your body to the limits, you're more likely to get injured, sick, or burnt-out than reach HD-ready perfection.
