Scrunchies May Be Fashion Gold Again Thanks to Olympics

Bloomingdale's, $32Bloomingdale's, $32As the Summer Olympics have captured hearts and spirits around the world, we are grateful for the inspiration, patriotic pride, and sense of oneness in the world they provide. However, the biggest gift the 2012 games may have given the world is even more significant for many -- the revival of the scrunchie.

Yes, it's true, those adorable, powerful little gymnasts just may have given women around the world the most perfect present -- permission to wear scrunchies again. They sported them during their daring routines, and people took note. On Twitter and in print, fashion followers everywhere are debating if the scrunchie is indeed going to make a mainstream fashion comeback, and more importantly, if it should.

Some are adamantly resisting their greatness, but I for one, say the return of the scrunchie is long overdue.

More from The Stir: Should U.S. Olympic Athletes Be Required to Wear Red, White, and Blue?

For the past decade or so, scrunchies have been right up there with mom jeans when it comes to big fat fashion dont's. In fact, women who wear mom jeans typically are wearing a scrunchie too, and let's just say they are not the fashion-forward set. Poor Hilary Clinton was crucified for daring to wear one last year, but it turns out she just may have been a little ahead of the trend whose time is now if there is any god in hair heaven.

Seriously, scrunchies were the best thing to happen to hair ever. They make incredible, full pony tails, that no elastic band can match; and the pop of color at the back of your head is just so much fun. Not to mention they're comfortable, good for your hair, and you can wear them on your wrist until you need them.

So it's about time they make a comeback, and key designers like Marc Jacobs are already on board (see adorable one above!). We just needed a little more mainstream push to really get the trend going again, and I think the gymnasts may have provided it.

So dig out your scrunchies if you still have them (I KNOW some of you do); shop for new ones if you missed out on their greatness the first time around. Wear them loud; wear them proud. Just don't wear them with mom jeans.

Would you like to see the scrunchies trend revived?

Theres a way to use them when making a hair bun. The hair covers it though. But I personally, I prefer the elastic hair bands but if you want to wear a scrunchy then go ahead.I dont care:P

As long as there are dancers, there will be scrunchies. As long as women work out, there will be scrunchies. As for the mom jean connection, it doesn't exist. I wear scrunchies and I don't own jeans of any sort. I wouldn't be caught dead in denim, t-shirts or sweats. Some women can pull the casual look off, but it's not for me. One hair trend I don't participate in is, barrettes. I loved them as a little girl, then as a teen I switched to bobby pins, then finally to hair pins as a grown up. Some grown women can still wear barrettes, even with formal attire, and somehow look stylish. I'm not one of them. You can keep the barrettes. I'll take the scrunchie.

Scrunchies = hair savers + cute and cool (literally). Nothing wrong with that.

Sooo... the anti-scrunchie campaign began with comedy writer's line in TV sitcom script? ....Apparently some people need a warning label on their TV screens. - "For entertainment use only."

I never understood what was so wrong about them in the first place. Why do we care so much what other people declare is "in" or "out" of fashion? Wear what you love and own it.

I guess that would make Hillary Clinton a fashion icon!

Ummm, seriously people? Scrunchies (in my humble opinion) are freaking fantastic! And I mean come on, is a hair accessory actually considered a "fashion risk"? How about some individuality!?

I wouldn't pay $32 for one, but I have no problem with them. I rarely worry about what other people think is "in"....

i wear them, of course they're always black, but i have wild curly hair and these flimsy hair ties get tangled in my hair and rip it out, so when it's hot out (california 90F) and i have to wear my hair up, i proudly wear scrunchies. i'm 21 and still rocking them..nothing wrong with them. these fashionistas who want to be like everyone else and follow the stupid trends.

I love scrunchies! They don't leave that dreaded ponytail mark when you take them out and if you have fine hair like me, no one can see how scrawny the base of your ponytail is. Mine is pretty scrawny, but I have a lot of fine hair so it never looks thin when it's down. I still wear them, but only when I'm working out at home and to bed every night. I'll put my hair in a high ponytail in one and when I take it out in the morning, instant volume with no ponytail line. Try it sometime. They're a God send for fine-haired girls.

They've never gone out of style.

No. This is not okay ever. I find it completely bizarre when I see women wearing scrunchies. My thought is always where in the hell are they still buying these things?!? They look ridiculous on anyone over the age of 12. When I saw the girls wearing them at the Olympics I was like noooooooooooooo! They're just ugly.

And you can get them just about everywhere- I buy mine at Wal-Mart.

I'll have you know that some of us can't wear hair ties because they pull our hair and can cause major headaches. Scrunchies don't do that and they are a life saver. I HAVE to wear my hair in a pony because it can't stay open, so I LOVE scrunchies and I'm in my 20's and there is nothing wrong with that. They work for MY hair. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean something's wrong with them.

I just might try wearing them on my wrist next summer.

I think scrunchies are for little girls and teenagers, not someone Hillary Clinton's age.

The scrunchie has been back for a while. And it's hardly a fashion faux pas unless you pick one with rhinestones. Let's leave those for gymnasts.
