Thinking About Hair Extensions? Here’s a Reason to Skip ‘Em

All of you ladies pining for the long, thick hair you weren't born with, take note: Naomi Campbell is the poster woman for why extensions aren't your answer.

The supermodel was vacationing in Ibiza this week, where she let her hair down -- literally. While taking a dip in the ocean, she displayed a disturbingly severe receding hairline, one that experts say is a result of years of having extensions glued and sewn into her hair. The added strands rip your real hair from the roots, say experts, leaving a tender scalp and, over time, bald spots like Naomi's.

She's not the only star to deal with the ugly effects. Other extension-loving celebs like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Britney Spears have all been snapped with patches of bare scalp and ratty roots. Even Jennifer Aniston admitted her extensions were the reason she got that short bob.

For me, seeing Campbell's dramatic hair loss has ended my lust for a quick long hair fix, it just doesn't seem worth it anymore. Tell us: Does seeing what the faux hair did to Naomi scare you too much to ever try it? Or would you still get extensions?

Get a wig or two, easy change-ups, no ripping out of your own hair. Wear your own hair short to help it recover, then pass up on the scary stuff, unless you love her look. What a shame that she has to suffer through losing her hair so painfully, only because models are supposed to be perfect all the time.

Hair care for black women is high maintenance and not everyone knows what they're doing (Including hair stylists). I seriously think she should get in touch with Tyra Banks' hair people (For some reason Tyra has a great head of natural hair DESPITE having had a history of weaves and wigs as long as Naomi) . As far as receding hairlines go due to bad edges this is an extreme. I'm glad she's secure enough to go out there without covering it up. This is why I'm pro natural hair all the way. It's not just a trend for me like it is for other black women. It's a lifestyle, way of being. I've learned how to take care of my hair and I'm still learning.

I personally hate extensions. It's too high maintanence and too expensive for these kinds of results. I understand that this is probably the result of wearing them for extended periods of time. I take care of my real hair and enjoy it.

A natural looking wig is all I'm doing from now on! My hair must be protected and salvaged for the rest of my days here!

I don't understand why these celebrities don't find any alternatives. There are clip-in and tape hair extensions which are easy to put on and not damaging to your own hair at all.

A break or just not at all?

I know a lady like this at my job. She's been gluing wigs to her head for so long that she's balding in the front. I personally think it's ridiculous.

looking at that, i don't think its because of the extensions. my mother has a medical condition that causes her hairline to look like that. and she never wore braids, weaves or anything that would cause something like that. I have seen people with damaged hairlines because of extensions and it doesn't look as bad as that.

I stopped wearing extensiions years ago because they are too tight.

Good for you, miss lady. Love yourself for who you are.

I'm actually surprised she would allow herself to be seen like that. She's been balding for years! Not a good look at all. Next week she will have hair down to her knees.

Yea, that's not supposed to happen. She is a fool for letting it. Extensions can be a protective style for hair growth if done correctly. For example, adding a few strands of loose braiding hair along with your own while doing a sew in pattern so the thread has a stronger base to pull against, thus reducing damage. Alternately you can use a weaving cap if its a full head, also reduces the lumps that often occur. Glue should be a temporary and last resort.

Hanah, you have beautiful wavy/loose curl, but unfortunately some people have thick, short unmanageable hair, so wigs is the only option,

We have many clients come into our wig stores to have us cut out the extensions. Mainly because they're put in too tight, but also, once they've grown out and much be put back, it's nearly imossible to not cut your own hair. From our experience at GodivasSecretWigs in CA, we feel bad for these clients and they end up enjoying wearing a light, comfortable wig when they want a great look.

I would not even consider it before seeing the scary picture. Why can't women love who they are created to be without sewing another person's glory on their head and parading around like it belongs to them when it clearly does not.

I have had the glue-ins twice.... definitely going to just stick with the clip-ins from now on. Yikes!

I've never tried extensions since I have medium length hair. When it's permed my hair looks just as good as any weave so there was no need for me to try it. I would love longer hair though like the kind you see on tv. After seeing this picture though, I will never try extensions.
