Behind the scenes: After work I decided I was going to go out and take some photos regardless how much rain came down. I protected my camera in a plastic bag; after taking a few OK shots I decided to go home. I was walking to the public transportation when I notice this guy's attempt to call a taxi multiple times, in fact this one time he was yelling to get in the middle of the street, but after a few shoots I captured this — the call that actually got him a taxi. This taught me a lesson when you're down and don't feel amazed by your photos: never put your camera away because you never know.

Behind the scenes: I took this shot in a small Canadian ski town called Sun Peaks. It is taken from inside a mate's condo looking out at a very Canadian ski town scene. I shot it in sepia to add to the winter country feel of it. The dust on the window and the icicles complete the shot

Title: Oradour-sur-Glane Ruins

Location: Limousin region in west-central France

Behind the scenes: On 10 June 1944, the idyllic French village of Oradour-sur-Glane was completely destroyed and 642 innocent men, women and children were massacred by soldiers in Hitler's elite 2nd Waffen-SS Panzer Division. This massacre was without giving any reasons for their actions and to this day there is no universally accepted explanation for this event. The ruins of the martyred village have been preserved as a reminder of this barbarity. One of the most moving locations I have ever visited ... a true snapshot in time.

Title: Caged

Behind the scenes: We watched the animals in the cages and they all looked so sad. They were trying to reach to us, which made it worse. Then one just gripped the cage and lowered his head as if to say he had enough.

Title: Life cycle

Behind the scenes: The photo is looking into the Cloud Gate, a famously shiny sculpture that everyone loves to touch and marvel at their reflections. I like this photo because it acts as a metaphor for life, everything is cyclical — we work to live, we live to work. We grow older, start families and our children take on the same roles and responsibilities we had. Life can get confusing and sometimes the meaning of it all can get a little blurry, but ultimately the important things are crystal clear.

Title: In search of higher mountains

Behind the scenes: I took this shot during a walk up to Mt Kosciuszko in April. The clouds get so low in the mountains that it sometimes feels like you're poking your head through them. Climbing Kosciuszko isn't a difficult task, but I've only ever done it once and many people will go their lives never climbing it. It serves to remind me that the first step of showing up and giving something a go is often the most difficult part, and where we all fail.

Title: Sunset Taj

Behind the scenes: The Taj Mahal was built in the 17th century by the Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Today this magnificent building has become a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This photo was taken on the north side of the Taj where there were less tourists around. I waited for the sunset to capture the warm glow reflected of it's marble surface.

Title: Majesty

Behind the scenes: The word majesty contains so much meaning, and we all associate it with many things and certain people. For me, the word "Majesty" resounds in my understanding of God, and this image also boldly proclaims power and awesomeness, another two characteristics of the Creator of Heaven and Earth. This word was embossed on a plaque in Hyde Park, amongst the beauty of creation. Flowers rich in colour and trees mighty in size, this plaque is minute in comparison. It is my hope the image strikes the viewer with a sense of purpose and determination.
