Our friends at Tripwire Interactive send word that the Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad - GOTY Edition is now available for purchase by newcomers, or via a free download for existing customers. For those that like to try before they buy Tripwire is kicking off a free weekend from now until Sunday 5/27 in which the full game can be played by anyone on Steam. There's also a 75% off sale on Steam for the Red Orchestra 2 GOTY edition until Monday the 28th.
We've got some of the specifics on the content that makes up the GOTY pack, which includes two new gameplay modes, a new map, and significant engine enhancements / optimizations.
"Action" mode - Featuring a crosshair, easier aiming and toned down recoil, reduced damage and open access to a wide range of weaponry Action mode is the perfect first step for players into the world of Red Orchestra.
"Classic" mode blends the gameplay innovations of the new game with the tactical and edgy gameplay of the original giving the fans of the first game exactly what they want.
Mamayev Kurgan - complete new map, featuring both close-quarters battles in trenches and bunkers, as well as longer ranged combat across the famous hill in Stalingrad
Refined and improved gameplay across the board, vehicle improvements, and way better performance and polish. We listened to the community and based on their feedback refined and tweaked almost every major feature in the game!
Unfortunately we weren't able to get a proper review up of Red Orchestra 2 last year, but I can tell you personally that it's a game that PC FPS fan needs to try. I spent more time with Red Orchestra 2 than I did with Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 last year, if that means anything to you.

I can play on ultra now with my crossfire 5850s on a phenom 2 quad core at 2.8 ghz! game feels more polished now, i am pretty stoked, looks nice, plays well, if you are into RO style gameplay
Tried this today with the free weekend play on steam. Its actually quite good. Prefer this to COD shite, its no BF3 beater though, not close in my opinion in all aspects, however I've ended up buying it. Good move giving a free play weekend trial!
Incidentally I tried MW3 MP the other week on a free play weekend, its shockingly awful! I couldn't believe how bad it was, I didn't mind cod4 mp too much, and others had their moments but thankfully due to the MW3 free trial, I've moved from 'would have bought MW3 one day once it gets past 50% off' to 'probably never buying it' after trying it.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! I couldn't get enough of it last year, and plan on jumping back in soon. It's such a unique shooter, very tactical but also action packed at the same time. I think getting kills in RO2 is a hell of a lot more satisfying than in other FPS games, rounds feel like they've got stopping power to them. It's a shame so many people missed out on it because of BF3 and MW3 (both of which launched around the same time).
Seriously, anyone that hasn't tried RO2 yet needs to this weekend. That's an order! ;)
Yea, its got some nice bits to the game, and the kills can be quite satisfying... overall FUN is the word, so well worth the money whilst the steam deal is on.
i played the Beta and it was so laggy and hard to get into.... but i'll give this new & improved version a whirl. ( since BF3 has been borked up by Dices' crap-tastic patches over & over again )
