Grid 2 announced

Codemasters has announced Grid 2, a sequel to 2008 racer Race Driver: Grid due next summer for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Powered by the latest version of Codemasters' in-house Ego engine, Grid 2 is now in full development after two years in pre-production. The debut trailer, below, shows two new locations, Paris and Chicago, though the game's career mode spans three continents, with Abu Dhabi, Miami and the California coast also set to feature.

Grid 2's vehicles have been handpicked from four decades of motorsport history, and players will race them around city streets, licensed real-world tracks, and mountain roads. Codemasters promises to "set new standards" for multiplayer in racing games, with deep customisation options and integration with RaceNet, Codemasters' answer to Need For Speed's Autolog.

Executive producer Clive Moody said: "Grid's back and we're going to make street, track and road racing exciting again. The core design philosophy for Grid 2 is that we treat the race as a character, not a consequence of simply putting cars on tracks.

"We're pushing boundaries once again with what can be accomplished in the genre via new tools, technology and innovations. The next generation of the Ego [engine] will power graphics, AI, handling and damage advancements that will immerse players in the racing experience like never before."

We've already had hands-on time with the game, and our full preview will be in the next issue of our print and iPad edition. E245 goes on sale on August 30.
