  • Starring: Jason Sudeikis, Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis
  • Summary: When long-term congressman Cam Brady commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins, director of the local Tourism Center. At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors' support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family's political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about. As Election Day closes in, the two are locked in a dead heat, with insults quickly escalating to injury until all they care about is burying each other. (Warner Bros. Pictures) Expand

Perhaps the best thing about the film is that it doesn't let those other players in the political process off the hook: the voters.

No, it's not a perfect movie, given how dangerously close it comes to running out of quality third-act punchlines before you're liable to have run out of Sno-caps and Raisinettes. Also, some of the biggest names in the supporting cast -- John Lithgow and Dan Aykroyd, specifically -- are all but wasted.

Because The Campaign tries to say something about truth vs. hogwash in election season, it's doubly sad the efforts of screenwriters Chris Henchy and Shawn Harwell come to so little.

  1. I found this movie to be absolutely hilarious. It's filled with the obvious sex jokes that you'd expect, but the not to subtle digs against the current political climate was spot on. They go after the Koch brothers, campaign finance reform, both Republicans and Democrats... just way funny. Expand
  2. Going into the theater, I was expecting quite a bit from this film. Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis appeared to be an excellent comedic pair, seeing as they were both incredibly funny actors. I was, unfortunately, let down, as I watched carbon copies of Ferrell’s character in The Anchorman argue with Galifianakis’s character from The Hangover for over an hour. The comedy was at times entertaining, but nothing groundbreaking, or even especially memorable. It was a safe kind of comedy for the two actors, but the pair had the potential to make it much more memorable. For the most part the jokes were too forced, and many fell flat. There were, however, the occasional funny scenes, such as Galifianakis’s first scene with his sons and wife, where there confessions accentuate Galifianakis’s quirky family. Dylan McDermott’s intense yet suspicious character as Galifianakis’s campaign manager was able to get some laughs as well. Also, most scenes with Dan Aykroyd and John Lithgow as the ruthless Motch Brothers were quite enjoyable. Unfortunately, The Campaign banked too much on the names of Ferrell and Galifianakis to carry it. Most of the funny scenes were already in the trailers. Their performances were too worn, and ended up making the characters rather uninteresting, and incredibly pitiful. In fact, there were almost no likable characters in the film, which really diminished my interest. Is The Campaign worth a watch? I would have to say not especially. If you’re a big fan of slapstick comedy, than The Campaign may be a movie for you. The Campaign is by no means a “horrible film,” as it did have its moments, but all in all, it really did not deliver as a film, and ultimately I feel as though I did not get my money’s worth. Expand
  3. This movie could have been so good BUT it really wasn't! Galifinakis was the only funny spot but the really getting very predictable and old Will Ferrel vulgar slapstick never landed. Had so much potential if you could have let the comedy work for itself instead of some need to make it feel like a Saturday Night Live Skit that would never end. Expand
