GameSpy 2001 Game of the Year: Gamers' Choice Awards

You pick 'em, we hand out the awards! This year's Gamers' Choice Awards accepted votes all month from the Internet to see what the fan favorites were. Some of the results may surprise you!

Gamers' Choice Awards: Final Results

About These Awards....

It was a great year for gaming, although it had its highs and lows. Highs: Two new videogame system releases, each with a powerful set of launch titles, while a third console system was just beginning to hit its stride. Lows: A slow year for PC gaming, where only the strategy category really cranked out a lot of hits.

What makes a great game? Our criteria was pretty flexible, particularly when comparing console games to a PC games. Gameplay was the most important factor -- some games just grab hold of you and deliver hour after hour of fun, and nothing outweighs that. The production values come next: Graphics, sound, animation, and artwork. But always we looked to gameplay to determine how relevant each of those were (some of our favorite PC sports simulators this year were almost exclusively text-based.) Accessibility was important -- we love a good complicated intricate tactical game as much as the next guy, but in our voting we tended to favor games that would appeal to the largest group of people. Console and PC games differ greatly, but when it came to PC gamer we were especially looking for expandible games, games the online community could really sink their teeth into with new maps and mods and add-ons. (We hope in future years we can hold videogames up to the same standards!)

And finally you had your intangibles -- subjective things like story and atmosphere. A horror game that truly inspires chills in us is pretty rare and deserves praise, as does any game where we actually start to care about the hero or heroine.

You can see that choosing a Game of the Year isn't an exact science... but nonetheless several games will bubble to the top. This feature rolled out in December of 2001, and for two weeks we served up the cream of the gaming crop. Prepare to be dazzled and delighted ... and then start rummaging through your software store to nab the hits you might have missed. Read on!
