This is lovely. As noted by VG247, The EVO fighting game series has launched a videogame scholarship, which will pay the university fees of one skilled player who wishes to study a game-related degree.
The $10,000 fund is taken from cash earned from pay-per-view streams of the EVO tournaments, and was underwritten by Evo's founder Tony Cannon. It's been created to "remember that it's the open, egalitarian nature of the fighting game scene, rooted in the personal connections inspired by arcades, that keeps it strong. To continue this great tradition, it's critical to support the next generation of players and help show that competitive gaming is not just a way to test yourself, earn great prizes, and connect with fellow players, it can also be a gateway to a fulfilling industry profession."
It's only open to US competitive gamers who meet the (fairly high, as far as we understand) academic requirements and wish to study "a degree in Computer Science, or a degree relevant to the design and/or development of video games." The details are on the EVO site.
