Telstra to build 20 mobile base stations in WA

Australia's number one telco is expanding its coverage in WA

Telstra will install several new mobile base stations in Western Australia’s (WA) north-west region to improve mobile and broadband coverage in the area.

Twelve new mobile base stations will be built in the north-west region, with a total of 20 to be built in WA.

“The previously unserviced area between Port Hedland and Fitzroy Crossing now has mobile coverage for the first time, following the commissioning of these base stations,” said Tony Carmichael, Telstra country wide area general manager for WA.

“These towers are also an important addition for emergency services in the Pilbara. Functioning mobile coverage can assist in emergencies, particularly in getting messages out to remote parts of the state prone to bushfires and other disasters.”

The towers are part of Telstra’s regional mobile communication project (RMCP), which was announced in January this year.

The $39.2 million contract with the Western Australian government to build the RMCP was first flagged in 2010 and comprises the addition of 113 new sites being built by the telco in WA.

The project, which will be carried out over three years, will result in Telstra’s coverage of WA increasing by 22 per cent - from 430,000 km2 to more than 525,000 km2.
