Mountain Lion now features connected standby via a feature Apple calls Power Nap. Even while sleeping your Mac will now fetch new emails, tweets, etc.. as well as download updates while it's plugged in. Power Nap is only supported on the 2nd generation MacBook Air or the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

So its not a stand-by by misiu_mp on Monday, June 11, 2012
It's gonna have to have the cpu, memory, disks, buses, NICs powered on to do this, so they shouldn't call it a standby or sleep.

The Connected Standby Microsoft proposes in Windows 8 is really really low power. Something even lower than current "sleep modes".

Likely the Mountain Lion version is similar. Though it won't be until Haswell we get that super low power Connected Standby. Right now with Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge its just idle mode + updates.
