Ouya launching with Final Fantasy III

Square Enix bringing "optimized" version of 1990 role-playing game to new Android-powered console with free demo during March 2013.

The new Android-powered $99 Ouya console will launch with one of the most popular franchises in gaming. Square Enix announced today that Final Fantasy III will be available at launch for the Ouya during March 2013.

Final Fantasy III is a role-playing game that originally launched in 1990 for the Famicom. The Ouya version will be "optimized" for the new console, and a free demo will also be available for the game through Ouya.

Final Fantasy III is the only game Square Enix has announced thus far for Ouya, though it may not be the last. The publisher said it is considering bringing additional content to Ouya in the future, though it did not specify further.

Ouya made waves earlier this month, when a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for the console exceeded its $950,000 funding target in under a day. As of press time, the campaign has attracted more than 45,000 backers who have together donated close to $6 million.

The Ouya console will plug into ordinary television sets, and will ship with a custom controller (pictured above). Any developer can create games for the system, which will support high-definition output via its Tegra3 chipset. It has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal flash storage, and has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support.

Ouya will also support the OnLive gaming service at launch, allowing users to stream the company's stable of current-generation games to their televisions through the console. For more on the Ouya console, check out GameSpot's feature Five Reasons Ouya Could Be a Winner (and Five Why It Won't).

Why has square never gotten around to re-releasing ff6 yet?

penguinguyx 7 pts

Hopefully, this will not be a port of the DS version. An "optimized" version of the original graphics would be best.

Succumbus 97 pts

I feel tempted to back with the $99... but shouldn't I simply be able to buy one once it's released for the same price...? Or is there some advantage to backing?

A Demo version of Final Fantasy 3. I guess that is Ouya "pack in" game. This could be a sleeper cult console. Hopefully it goes well.

Ouya? What kind of name is that?

obsequies 105 pts

franzito most linux based systems/applications use strange names..ubuntu..you know how many not in the know people can't pronounce that properly

mr_england 6 pts

Why do they keep mentioning that it can be plugged into an ordinary TV like that's some sort of special feature? That's how pretty much every home console I've ever owned has worked.

Cillah187 103 pts

Oh Christ... The comments about the name have begun. If it has games you like, if it plays them well, if it has a good price, what does it matter if the name is a little bit strange? Open your tiny little closed minds for once in your lives and get over it.

Cillah187 103 pts

@swamptick @swamptick So what I said was childish? How do you figure? How is me telling others to open their minds and get over it being childish? I didn't even say it in a childish way. What's your problem with what I said? And what effect did you think saying "Grow up." would have on me?

Cillah187 103 pts

And now it seems I have @'d you twice in my message. See what you made me do?

if we can survive with the name "Wii", then we can survive with the name "ouya"

Let's give this machine a chance...it may not be for you, but it'll find it's market.

soulless4now 173 pts

Meh, they can have that game.

Llama345 245 pts

I feel like they are trying to pull a fast one.  This isn't the FFVI with espers that most people love.

bbkkristian 14 pts

Llama345 It isn't, but this one is one to give a shot; it introduces the majestic job system. Every Final Fantasy fan who hasn't gotten the chance to experience it is missing out

Succumbus 97 pts

 Llama345 I loved FFIII.. I feel it's a good move.

Master_Turismo 92 pts

So that makes two to three things to look for in Ouya.

obsequies 105 pts

Master_Turismo but it performs these tasks properly..Im thinking indie..and xbmc will be a hit

MJ12-Conspiracy 315 pts

Hold the phone, stop the presses Final Fantasy is on the thing......

Uh I don't care.....

Am I supposed to get excited for this? I'd rather play Baldur's Gate....whatta ya know I own Baldur's Gate and all of the D&D; games that followed....

Llama345 245 pts

MJ12-Conspiracy Cool story bro, have fun playing them

XeonForce 31 pts

What does the Ouya do that any PC made in the last 10 years won't?

Falru 161 pts

XeonForce Offer a standardized platform for indie game development that (hopefully) doesn't bullshit developers to death.

obsequies 105 pts

XeonForce xbmc on you're hdtv for 90 dollars without the need to have your big laptop always running it..while trying to figure out how to use a remote for it. Also..this is basically the steam box done right..without valve behind it because they wouldn't even try a risk like this..I imagine if valve did it you would be for it

rising_k 20 pts

Looking good, the problem to me was that they choose the wrong FFIII, I want a remake of FFVI, not a port of FFIII. Well at least Square is supporting the thing so that's a good thing, hope it doesn't fail like the Wonder Swan Color though. Having only Final Fantasy on there especially a port won't do it no justice unless it sells a bundle for Square.

luqmanr 67 pts

I wish there's Kingdom Hearts for OUYA, even if it's a remake of BBS, 358/2, Coded, 3D, or even the first two, I don't mind.

Ovirew 163 pts

Still the only important FF game that never had its original version released anywhere outside of Japan.

Tauu 78 pts

If Ouya has great exclusive games that generate a lot of buzz, the $99 console will sell millions in no time. Console gaming has become too expensive and dull due to uninteresting games. Ouya could change all of that. Game development needs to be brought back down to a smaller scale like what we had in the 80's and 90's. If that environment can exist again, there will be innovative and exciting new games popping out left and right.

demonkingx5 94 pts

you guys should hold off on the  criticism till its release for a good while keep an open mind. i know sometimes i forget to do that

luqmanr 67 pts

tehtimeisnow LOL, Why does you keep bashing OUYA on every OUYA news on gamespot?

KeeseKiller7 65 pts

luqmanr I've seen him a bunch, but it's not just OUYA. He's just an iPad sheep who keeps trolling on anything not Apple and saying pretty much the same thing.

I think I just saw his comments in the 3DS XL article and the SWTOR article.

WhiteStormy 11 pts

tehtimeisnow The avatar alone screams "Apple fanboy"  so I think your opinion may be a little bias. lol

So it plays cell games and old abandonware you could get for free online? just download an emulator, Im sick of all these guys trying to cash in on 20 year old games, it's so pathetic people actually buy them for like 10$. With 1GB of RAM it cant do much else. I'll pass.

LtReviews 219 pts

 Suikogaiden

You don't think an Open Source console is going to attract alot of developers?

Then you don't think.

Suikogaiden 227 pts

 LtReviews

Most developers go where the money is at, I dont see this becoming anything much.

luqmanr 67 pts

Suikogaiden  LtReviews But indie will go where it's much less of a hassle to develop.

Rovelius 235 pts

Suikogaiden You're thinking of publishers, not devs...

luqmanr 67 pts

 XeonForce Why not just OUYA?

Falru 161 pts

 luqmanr Why not Zoidberg?

holenjd 13 pts

Well i am now officially sold.
