Rewards Credit Cards
A rewards card is a credit card which offers rewards points for consumer purchases. These cards advertise a point per dollar rate where with each dollar spent, the customer can earn rewards points. The rewards points can then be redeemed with the rewards program from each institution.
The most popular rewards program in Australia is the Qantas Frequent Flyer program which offers flights and other products for redemption with rewards points earned. Other programs include the American Express Membership Rewards program, the Westpac Altitude program, the Velocity (Virgin) program and the Commonwealth Bank Awards program. The membership rewards program is vital in understanding the value of a rewards point earned on a credit card. If you earn one point per dollar with a rewards card, then the redemption rate is key. If one rewards program offers a $100 Myer voucher for 10,000 rewards points an the other program requires 30,000 rewards points, then the earn rate of the card is controlled by the redemption rate within the rewards program.
The Qantas Frequent Flyer program now requires that cards are nomimated as direct earn cards which means that they earn points directly into the Qantas program (in the past, consumers were able to earn points in their native card program and transfer points to Qantas at their discretion). There are direct earn cards available from all the major banks and providers.
With any rewards credit card you will gain maximum benefits if you use your card regularly. The more you spend the more points you earn. The flip side to this is that typically, these cards are not good cards to accrue any debt as they feature higher rates of interest than many other credit cards. Accordingly, it is wise not to choose a rewards credit card if you suspect that you may not be able to pay the outstanding balance in full each month. The interest you will end up paying on your debt will outweigh the benefits gained through rewards.
When used wisely, rewards credit cards can save you money. If you are someone who travels regularly a rewards card offering air miles and other travel bonuses such as complimentary flights, travel insurance or free upgrades all of which can be very valuable. Be sure to check all the fees and charges associated with the rewards card before you commit to applying. There might be a large annual fee or a high cash advance rate.
Also, look into the points scheme associated with the credit card you are considering. You will generally not earn points for balance transfers or cash advances. Are the points you earn capped i.e. can you only earn a certain amount each year? Do the points expire if you don’t use your card for a period of time? What are the redemption options –can you redeem with a mixture of points and money? Are you really aware of what points earned with be worth? Points can be worth different amounts depending on what you buy so it pays to be astute with points purchases and try to get the maximum possible points value.
Some rewards credit cards allow you to build up a collection of rewards points quite quickly. There might be bonus points available to new applicants or through bonus partners that you spend at key retailers regularly. A danger with rewards credit cards is the temptation to overspend just in an attempt to earn more points. Establish an understanding of the points earn rate and the value of each point withing the rewards program, but don’t overspend just to earn points - it will never be worth it – rewards points are just a nice add on to your regular spending patterns.
