Freeview customers should not pay for 4G disruption, BBC says

Freeview customers should not be forced to foot the bill to keep their television reception which is likely to be disrupted by the rollout of 4G mobile phones, a BBC executive has said.

More than two million Freeview customers are likely to be hit when the new technology is introduced next year.

John Tate, director of policy and strategy at the BBC, has now said the enormous payment ought to be met by mobile phone companies, under the principle of the “polluter pays”.

“This is a hugely profitable business for the companies, and hugely cash-generative for the Government, and the viewer shouldn’t be the party that loses out,” he said.

The signal disruption is expected to occur within 2km of new 4G transmitters, affecting more than two million homes.

The Government has already allocation £180m to combating the problem, but households could face paying up to £212 for signal filter equipment to be installed.

Freeview and the BBC argue the cost should not be met by viewers.

Ilse Howling, managing director of Freeview, told the Independent anyone without a filter would suffer “significant pixellation” on their television sets.

“They are stopping people watching Coronation Street,” she added. “We think the Government has got this wrong.”

Mr Tate has said previously: “There are plans in place that aim to reduce this interference but we believe that sufficient money should be deducted from the 4G auction proceeds to prevent it altogether.”

A spokeswoman for The Voice of the Listener and Viewer has said the proposals could “remove the option of free-to-air television from millions of viewers”.

"This runs completely against the UK's system of public service broadcasting whereby there is universal access for all citizens to programmes made by the main terrestrial channels.,” she said.

“It is an outrage."
