Nikki Boertman: Shapewear helps cheaper duds fit better

One of the most important things we can do to make all clothing look better is to get a proper fit.

It doesn't matter if you are wearing an Armani suit or Versace dress, an ill-fitting garment will still look cheap. A brand-name deal is no deal if it doesn't fit correctly.

I often see men and women with "flood pants" because a few extra pounds around their waist is making their pants ride too high. I've been there; feeling uneasy about myself, not to mention uncomfortable in my too-snug trousers.

If your pants are too short or tugging at the seams because of a change in weight, either commit to exercise and a change in diet until you are back where your body and your clothing are comfortable, or commit to getting new pants. I try to keep my weight down, not because I feel the need to be thin, but because I simply can't afford a new wardrobe!

Regardless of one's size, proper fit makes clothing look and feel better, and when we feel better, we stand upright and hold ourselves with more confidence. I'm not an expert on fitting men's clothing, but I found a great guide at guystyle.com (search for "ultimate men's clothing fit guide").

Most well-made designer clothing is lined to help the garment drape better. Inexpensive clothing will often skip the lining to cut costs. To help discount clothing look better, wear shapewear underneath to act as a lining. This is especially true with jersey knits that are so popular.

Drapey and clingy knits may be comfortable, but they are very unforgiving. By smoothing out your silhouette, camouflaging unsightly bulges, smoothing panty lines and banishing the dreaded "muffin top," shapewear is a worthwhile investment for women of all sizes, shapes and ages.

I have a very young and fit friend who is a reigning beauty queen and model who wears shapewear often. She doesn't do this out of vanity; she understands how a good foundation can make clothing look better.

Modern body shapers are usually made with Spandex and are not the uncomfortable girdles they once were. Men's shapers that look like T-shirts or tanks can be found at mensworx.com.

Spanx is a very popular line of shapewear for women and men. Also available is a less expensive line of Spanx for women at Target, and you can find discounted body shapers at T.J. Maxx. A better name brand may last longer, but the most important thing is whether it fits well and is comfortable.

Body shapers come in different shapes, styles and sizes and are not just for wearing under dresses. High-waist briefs can help with muffin tops when wearing jeans and a top. Shaping shorts can help with panty lines. Bodysuits can help with multiple areas.

Pay attention to the care label; most Spandex care labels advise no bleach or heat, which can damage the synthetic fibers. Select a color closest to your skin tone for most versatility. Lace and seams may show through sheer fabrics, so plain designs will help create a smoother foundation.
