Friend says suspect didn't study but still got A's

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California man who has known the suspect in the Colorado movie theater shooting for more than a decade says that in high school, he liked to play cards and video games.

Twenty-four-year-old Ritchie Duong told the Los Angeles Times they also both attended undergraduate school at the University of California, Riverside, where they saw each other once a week to watch "Lost."

They last met in December for dinner and a movie. Duong says Holmes seemed fine.

Duong says academics came easily to Holmes both at high school and at the UC Riverside. Duong says he remembers that in one college class they had together, Holmes didn't take notes but would just sit through class and always got an A.

Wow, nothing like categorizing and labeling smart people. Lets say this together..."Smartness does not make you mentally ill"!!

Unfortunately, our social construct is seriously flawed. @ AI, we are ALL odd when compared to what "society" expects from us- which gives us our perception of ourselves. I suspect James Holmes has schizophrenia. I suspect people knew this, but because mental illness is shunned, and because a person has mental illness, people try to ignore or avoid it, society makes it easier for ill individuals to deal with their illness alone. You do not "need" a lot of friends, but we ALL need close relationships in order to be healthy...even if that is just one person. That does not preclude any mental health issues, but it is "support", for someone who may be having altered thoughts...and for the protection of others. There used to be hospitals where people could go if they were afflicted with mental health issues...It had to have taken James Holmes a long time to stockpile his apartment. Why did no one know this? It is incredibly horrifying, sad, and tragic...yet we did not learn from Loughner?

Don't worry A.I. Most people are lucky to have one or two true friends throughout their lifetime. Lots of social acquaintances do not equal real friends. It just means a lot more people to please.

Passing College level courses isn't really so much about learning as much as it is about memorization. Memorize what the Professor says and you will pass easily. You learn, apply what you memorized in real life.

Isn't that the truth? I made the mistake of trying to apply something we learned in class on a midterm, got a terrible grade. On the next midterm, I just regurgitated what the prof said word for word and got an A. Only thing I learned was how to please a professor's ego. But hey, I guess that's worth $50,000 tuition, right?

@ Ustel - "You don't become a neurosurgeon in a PhD program"? Really, where did you get your facts? You are absolutely wrong.

        The Combined Harvard/MIT Program Overview

The Harvard Medical School (HMS) MD-PhD Program, sponsored primarily by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through its Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) since 1974, provides fellowship support for selected and highly qualified students who have elected to pursue both the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. The program is split into two tracks: one for the basic and translational sciences and one for the social sciences.

      Riveting story. Here's another one;

Friend says he liked sci-fi movies, popcorn and always had a gay thing for Harry Potter and Frodo.

Without something more socially acceptable to blame all this on, like Dungeons and Dragons, Heavy Metal Music, or DOOM, these are the articles we will be left with.

Its what you DO with your intellect, not that you have it. You can help humanity, or help destroy it, we pollute our air, water, land.................., and we are the most " intelligent "?

At some point our desire for the one secret detail to show us where and when and how this guy snapped crosses the line into absurdity. This article is past that line. Next article: "Friend Says Suspect Washed and Rinsed Hair Using Brand Name Conditioner, But Didn't Repeat! Experts Weigh In."

What a shame: a smart, handsome Scottish young man...totally s.,c.,r.,e.,w.,e.,d., up his life - WHAT A WASTE- especially, comparing to the average of all human beings...

I would have like to see which class was this exactly. In most of my classes everyone is passing and all the laptops are on facebook.

Headline says he didn't study. The text merely says he didn't take notes. And that discrepancy is the only interesting thing about the article.

Now the media is going to blame video games again.....

Not studying and getting "A"'s is easy if you are taking simple courses. If they said that he never took notes and got "A"'s in integral calculus and biochemistry, I may be impressed.
    • Grant  •  2 days 3 hrs ago
I just lost a minute of my life reading that not taking notes in class is the same thing as not studying.

Anyone else here think that the "Associated Press" should stop associating and do something more useful with its time?
