Russia angry over 'blame' on Syria

MOSCOW (AP) — Moscow bristled at the West for its attempts to "put the blame" on Russia for escalating the Syrian civil war, hours after Moscow vetoed a Western-backed United Nations resolution aimed at pressuring President Bashar Assad's government to end the war.

Russia was adamantly opposed to any mention of Chapter 7 of the United Nations Charter, which could eventually allow the use of force to end the conflict in Syria.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in televised remarks that the attempts of "certain Western countries" to blame Russia for the escalation of the Syrian conflict because of Moscow's refusal to support the resolution are "absolutely unacceptable."

Moscow remains a key backer of President Bashar Assad and has for months resisted Western sanctions against his regime.

The people who say the UN is a joke confuse me sometimes. The UN is a joke because they lack the power to do anything right? But...those same people who criticize the UN for being ineffective and weak would get outraged if the UN became too powerful.

The UN is what it is today because of what as people decided to make it. After WW2, we intended the UN to be an entity for nations to have dialogue, make resolutions and settle issues. The UN was never meant to be a NATO like force that acts as a unified police force. The same people who criticize the UN for being weak would be angry if it became that powerful. Perhaps in a few centuries, but not today.

Thank god for the UN! That American young men don't have to get killed all over the world in every political disagreement in all nations a veteran of one war

The UN cannot be everywhere at once and defend every country that is getting its #$%$ kicked. The Russians are aloud to have their opinion and it should be respected along with China's. Let the damn thing play itself out and anyone that says we should get militarily involved should be ready to suit up and spill their or othwer blood to back up their battlleship mouths with their rowboat #$%$es.

Checks and balances. Just what the UN was suppose to do. Not the USA protecting Israel at the expense of every other country in the region. The UN is also a joke when it comes to preventing disasters. The UN chief even lied about knowing of the Rwanda genocide -- that's how bad it is.

@Kippy: Read Ezekiel Old Testament prophecy of the account the Russia, Turkey, Iran (Persia) Lbiya and others who will attack Israel soon. I am not making predictions here but all being set up for this...its quite obvious for those who follow scripture to see. Yet you don't have to follow Bible or be a scholar to note this is all happening ina perfect timeline. One can see all the players or actors in this theatre of confilct are mentioned in Chapter 38-40

Unfortunatley for them they will get wiped out by God not by man!..

If I was Assad, I would be concern about Russia and China's motivation. Are they really with me? At least a outside force could come in and create a sense of peace wherefore a political solution could be achieve. He then could take his billions hidden away and live in comfort somewhere in Sudan. The way things are going; he'll eventually be detroned and dangle at the end of a rope like Sadaam Hussien.

Everbody is looking at all these old Arab regimes falling as though it is a good thing. There is an underlying cause of the events that have taken place over the last couple of years in the Middle East. The common thing in them all is The Muslim Brotherhood. They are extremely anti-Israel and United States. The fact that it is Brotherhood members who are rising to power in these nations means that they will be united in the common cause of eleminating Israel and the US. They are just as bad as the Taliban.

Cop out. No one was blameing you for their idiocy. We ALL know they are wacked for years.
We were blameing you of arming them so the battle would be long and costly. THAT plus failure to apply political pressure.

Its just as well, Im fairly certain that the best thing probably WONT happen, thats Turkey just permanently invading and occupying the country.

@ Ehsanul - I suppose if you were an innocent caught in the middle of a conflict ( not fighting for either side) you would want to be ignored by the international community as well. Watch "Hotel Rwanda" to get an idea of what I'm talking about. The UN is trying to stop the violence so that there can be a peaceful resolution that wouldn't lead to thousands dead in the street and so that Syria isn't a pile of soldering rubble.

@ Ruperto - 9/11 was "retaliation" by extremist for what they see as western encroachment. The followers of these cults will stop at nothing to accomplish what they want and do. I mean before 9/11 the US was isolationist and the only war we entered was the Gulf War and that was to liberate Kuwait from the Iraq invaders. The bottom line is the terrorist we face will not be happy until all people that differ from them are wiped off the face of the earth, kinda like the mantra of the Nazis. Playing Isolationist and being defensive about it will not make things easier, it will only exasperate the problems more so. Also the 11 year war we were in Iraq was based off of false pretenses, ie oil not WMDs. About the only good aspect about it, sad to say, is that it moves the fight off of this continent where US citizens are not caught in the crossfire. Let the Muslims content with themselves outside the US, which would not happen under Saddam's govt nor any other totalitarian govt.

People just love to eat up the propaganda and hide from the truth. Those that believe that this is an internal struggle fail to notice that the the war against Assad is being fought with seasoned mercenaries from all over the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe. Financed and armed by Sunni Kings, the Turks and American taxpayer. Three wars fought and one adverted so far in Egypt. So to advance the goals of the Saudis for Sunni and economic dominance.

Let Russia, China, US and UN stay out of it other than protecting refuges. If it is such a concern to the area, let moderate Arab nations help them out.
      • Real truth 2 days 2 hrs ago
ALL of the other arab nations are hypocrite dictatorships, trying to change a government they do not like...who do u think supplies the rebels with tanks?

        which moderate arab nations?
      • 1dubljj 2 days 4 hrs ago
While I agree other Arab states need to do more, I think the rest of the world is tired of the US trying to police everything that goes on. No matter what we do or don't do, we will be condemned in some quarters as being responsible. As for the article, yes, Russia is to blame for not being in step with the rest of the world and for giving the regime encouragement to continue as usual because they have a powerful ally.
