Call for Nominations

The NAS is accepting nominations for its 2013 awards in a wide range of fields spanning the physical, biological, and social sciences. Nominations will be accepted through October 1, 2012.

Pictured above: NAS Award in Chemical Sciences, presented annually for innovative research in the chemical sciences that in the broadest sense contributes to a better understanding of the natural sciences and to the benefit of humanity. The award was first presented in 1979 to Linus Pauling.

Harold Shapiro Awarded the 2012 Public Welfare Medal

Harold T. Shapiro, an economist lauded for his ability to distill, debate, and resolve the complex aspects of controversial scientific issues, received the 2012 Public Welfare Medal at a ceremony held in Washington, DC. Established in 1914, the medal is presented annually to honor extraordinary use of science for the public good. Watch the acceptance speech online.
