Yay, more news about numbers that are strictly speaking of relevance only to publishers and their investors! Microsoft has announced record revenues in the US for the three month period ending 30th June, earning $18.06 billion as against $17.37 billion during the same period last year.
It has, however, made an overall net loss of $492 million, thanks chiefly to a one-time "goodwill impairment charge" associated with a collapsed deal that set Redmond back $6.2 billion. Cheers to Engadget for the figures and fancy financial language.
Revenue for the Entertainment and Devices division shot up dramatically to a tidy $1.78 billion. Microsoft's acquisition of Skype probably has a lot to do with that. Xbox 360 shipments are down 35 per cent - 1.1 million Xbox 360 consoles compared to 1.7 million - but the console remains North America's home magical picture-making device of choice: it has now topped hardware charts for 18 months straight. Xbox Live membership is up 15 per cent year-over-year.
