Philippine carrier Smart Communications has slashed its BlackBerry data plan down to P599 from P1,200. The announcement was made through their Facebook page, it is certainly be something welcomed by current Smart customers.

The BlackBerry data plan, called BB Unli Data includes unlimited BBM, email, internet browsing (surfing) and social networking. With Smart bringing the plan down to P599 per month it puts it inline with the other major carrier in the Philippines, Globe Telecom. The new price is available to both prepaid and postpaid customers.

Smart also offer daily and weekly BlackBerry data plans for P50 and P300 respectively. To get yourself the onto the BlackBerry data plan all you have to do is text 'BB Month' to 2207. Of course, if you're just wanting the daily or weekly plan just insert 'day' or 'week' instead of month.

Sprint had previously released OS 7.1.0.580 for the BlackBerry Bold 9930 and Torch 9850 as OTA updates and now both are available for download from their site.  While this is an official release, remember to use caution when updating your device. I was walking around town the other day and saw a great deal as I passed a T-Mobile store. Get two BlackBerry devices on a family plan. Of course, it piqued my interested so I had to go in and inquire about it.

The family deal is based on getting two BlackBerry Curve 9320 devices. Right now T-Mobile UK offers the Curve 9320 free on the £15.50 per month tariff where you get 100 mins, 500 texts, 250MB data, plus an Unlimited Booster. When you purchase two Curve 9320 devices you get the second one at a £5 discount so it becomes £10.50 per month for the same plan and you end up paying £26 a month for the two devices.

Just what is the Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) and Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA)? We'll break it down for you.

Last week we noted that many users received an emergency alert on some devices for a storm that passed through the East coast. In the comments it was noted that a bevy of other users across North America had also received alerts in the last few weeks. Steven E. Zipperstein is now serving as the newly appointed Vice President and Chief Legal Officer of Research In Motion. Zipperstein joins RIM from his most recent position at Verizon, but he has also worked with other large companies in the past. He was placed at RIM by legal search firm Major, Lindsey & Africa. His role will include legal, compliance, communications and government relations. Following up on our video posted of the BlackBerry 10 photo editor running on the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha, a new set of slides also showing it off have now popped up. In them, you can see the issue RIM is facing with the form factor choices between the N-Series devices and the L-Series devices but aside from that, you get a good look at the app and how interactions will work with it.

Again, it's important to point out none of this should be considered finalized at this point in fact, the slides slightly differ from what we saw in the video but after all this time, it's nice to see the pieces of the BlackBerry 10 puzzle coming together as they should.

We all know RIM has been working on numerous different things for BlackBerry 10. Now, we're getting a hands on look at some of their plans for photo editing on the BlackBerry PlayBook and eventually, BlackBerry 10. BlackBerry devices have never really been known for their photo editing skills. Sure, there are a lot of apps out that are great but RIM truly needs a great built-in solution and as shown in the above video -- they seem all too aware of that.

As such, they're building a great solution for it, though keep in mind it could change from what it is currently. Filters, frames, transformations and photo enhancement features will all be built-in making the experience truly awesome, as it always should have been. Looking through the file personally, I can tell it has deep integration with Scalado and that's why it currently doesn't function as it should on the Dev Alpha. It needs the updated camera that RIM is running on higher versions of the Dev Alpha OS. However, there's no doubt in my mind that RIM has it up and running as it should internally.

Personally, the idea of having Instagram available for BlackBerry 10 is great but having Instagram like functions built-in is just as important to me -- you know, just in case Instagram doesn't have any desire to build a BlackBerry 10 app for whatever reason. Also, video editing is getting a makeover as well but that will have to wait for another day.
