Orange

New into App World this week is a great little application for Orange customers. Travel Angel is a free app designed to track and monitor your BlackBerry usage whilst abroad. With Travel Angel installed on your device as soon as you get to your destination the app will automatically detect you are in another country and if you do not already have a roaming bundle the app will recommend one based on your normal usage - clever stuff. Travel Angel will also monitor what services you are using to ensure you do not go over your allowance. You can set up notifications to give you peace of mind. And that's it. Simple, yet so useful.

Nice one Orange. Let's hope the other networks follow in your tracks.

Running BlackBerry 7.1, sporting a FM radio and a dedicated BBM key the BlackBerry Curve 9320 may be a cheap BlackBerry but it offers fantastic value for money. If you are into your social networking and staying in touch with your buddies the 9320 may well be the device of your dreams without breaking the bank.

The 9320 is available in either black or white so you can choose the colour to suit your style. The offer will run up until Thursday August 2nd and you can pick up the device on T-Mobile, Virgin or Vodafone. This may well be bargain of the year.

Monster Chase!

Monster Chase, a new game for the BlackBerry PlayBook by Snowed in Studios, is a fun way that kids can work on their concentration and memory skills as well as improve their cognitive ability. What kid wouldn’t find scaring monsters away with toys fun?

The game is simple to play so it works for lots of different age levels (including adults). All you have to do to scare the monster away is find the toy that is shown in the box. The toys are hidden all around the room inside different objects. You can open the boxes and doors simply by tapping on them, but remember where they’re at! Every wrong guess adds to the Monster Meter and after three incorrect tries, another monster appears.

Features and Benefits

  • Simple and user-friendly interface that is easy to play right from the start
  • 5 game modes to choose from for hours of fun
  • Local multiplayer mode so you can play with friends and family
  • Colorful artwork designed for kid ages 4-9
  • Available in English, French, and German
  • Ability to turn both the sounds and music off or turn off both
  • Increases concentration and memory
  • Helps to develop cognitive ability
  • Enhances reasoning skills

Monster Chase is toted to be a game for kids but I find myself playing it almost as much as my five year old. I like that I can turn both the sounds and music off for those nights when I can’t sleep and need something to do as well as being able to just turn the music off for when Payten wants to play (she says it’s too spooky). It does seem to take a while for the game to open but after that, it plays just fine. Some reviews say that the PlayBook screen’s responsiveness lags for them but that wasn’t the case for me.

Monster Chase is available in BlackBerry App World for only $0.99. There is also a Lite (FREE) version which only has one game mode and no multiplayer.

Barclays

The banks in the UK have been having a field day over the last few months in terms of giving us BlackBerry apps. Barclays is the latest to launch a mobile app for customers and it looks to be one of the better ones in terms of available features.

Like with some of the other apps; getting set up with the Barclays Mobile Banking app involves registering for the service and then going through the security process. Once this is done you will then only need to enter your 5-digit passcode each time you launch the app.

This isn't the first app that Barclays has given us for BlackBerry. Remember Barclays Pingit that we posted about back in February? That one was a simple way to transfer money from your account to another Barclays customers. Looks like Barclays are into giving us BlackBerry users plenty of loving. (App wise I mean!)

Features of Barclays Mobile Banking include:

- Check your latest balances
- View your most recent transactions
- Transfer funds between your accounts
- Make payments to people you've paid before and have put in your payee list
- Find your nearest Barclays branch or ATM
- Keep your accounts safe - our new log-in process makes access simpler, but it has the same advanced security levels as Online Banking

BlackBerry is secure!

Research In Motion is co-sponsoring this year's Pwn2Own competition along with AT&T, HP DVLabs, and TippingPoint. The event, being held at the EUSecWest conference in Amsterdam on September 19th and 20th, will be the first Pwn2Own dedicated to the mobile attack surface. The primary goal is to demonstrate the current security posture of the most prevalent mobile technologies in use today; including attacks on mobile web browsers, Near Field Communication (NFC), Short Message Service (SMS), and the cellular baseband.

Contestants will choose the device they wish to compromise during pre-registration with phones such as the BlackBerry Bold 9930, Samsung Galaxy S3, Nokia Lumia 900, and the iPhone 4S as some of the options. The exact OS version, firmware and model numbers will also be coordinated during pre-registration. The only requirement is that it be a current device and running the latest operating system. For those registering on-site, the devices listed above will be available if the target is not already compromised.
