Poynt BlackBerry PlayBook

Earlier this month, Poynt issued a press release stating that they had filed under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. While it was easy to misread the release itself, many (CB included) understood the information to mean Poynt was filing for bankruptcy -- this thankfully isn't the case. Poynt is the same as it ever was and won't be disappearing any time soon.

Yesterday I had a chance to chat with Poynt CEO Andrew Osis and he was kind enough to fill me in and bring me up to speed on what's happening at Poynt.

Seidio Innocell 3000mAH Super Extended Life Battery for the Bold 9900/30

There's nothing worse than having your battery die at the most inopportune time or place especially when travelling and you forget to bring a spare charger or battery. As I work in Manhattan, signal is normally weak in the buildings and my desk happens to be in a dead zone that drains the life out of my device.

While I'm not running a lot of apps (the heavy hitters are SocialScope, QuickLaunch, BeBuzz, BeWeather, and Foursquare), I average no more than 6-7 hours. Rather than carry around a USB cable and car charger or panic when staying late for work for fear of having no BlackBerry on the way home, I picked up the Seidio Innocell 3000mAH Super Extended Life Battery. Would I be stuck searching for an outlet once again? Click on the jump to find out.

BeWeather

Everyone's favorite weather app BeWeather has gotten a small but highly important update this week. This latest version brings the app up to v2.6.22 and with it a fix for one of the most complained about issues on BlackBerry smartphones - memory leak.

Update includes:

  • Fixed potential memory leak
  • Improved current location detection

While this isn't a major update for most, it has the possibility of being one for anyone who thinks they may have been experiencing a potential memory leak while having BeWeather on their device.

I've been a BeWeather user for so long yet it still remains one of my faves and the most recommended by me to friends. This update is only for the BeWeather app running on your BlackBerry smartphones, not the HD PlayBook version.

If you don't see the update in App World yet, simply keep refreshing your list and it'll show up soon enough.

BlackBerry 10 will have an awesome virtual keyboard!

If you've been following the news regarding BlackBerry 10, then you likely already know that the first BB10 device will be a full touchscreen, with the QWERTY version following close behind. This decision has shocked some people, making many wonder why RIM would go such a route when one of the most popular features of BlackBerry, and arguably one that RIM has perfected, is the QWERTY keyboard. When Kevin asked him about this decision, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins had this to say:

"There's two reasons for this. The first reason, without being arrogant, I think we own the full qwerty market. The Bold 9900 is doing a good job of this in the market with our corporate customers. In the US we're most under pressure with the BYOD movement in enterprises, so we need to get in the battle. That's why we need the entry card, which is the full touch device, so we can go to enterprises and say, hey look at this, this is the full touch from BlackBerry and it does things way better than what you have today. And I think it's going to be way better. And then the qwerty comes immediately thereafter."

"The second reason is technology. Building the full touch device on this platform is more complicated than the qwerty one. So it's natural that you make the more complex product first that actually clears the pipeline for the platform."

The reasoning behind the decision makes a lot of sense, and hopefully will prove to be a wise one. Plus, that new virtual keyboard we've seen peeks of looks hot! Maybe it's enough to turn even the most devout physical keyboard users' heads?

CrackBerry nation, we want to know which BB10 device you're lusting after. Does the smooth, all touchscreen device have your curiosity piqued? Are you planning to stick with the tried-and-true QWERTY model, even if you have to wait a little longer to get it? Let us know in the poll above, then leave a comment below letting us know why you chose what you did!

Canon BlackBerry App

While HP has their printing application for BlackBerry smartphones, the other printing giant that is Canon has been a little quiet in the mobile space until now. Cannon is officially releasing a mobile application for the BlackBerry smartphone. The application will allow users to not only print directly from their BlackBerry, but also scan documents from their Canon Multi Function printer and have it sent directly to their handheld.

“In today’s highly mobile workplace users seek instant access to important documents without sacrificing print quality,” said Sam Yoshida, vice president and general manager, Marketing, Business Imaging Solutions Group, Canon U.S.A. “The Canon Direct Print and Scan for Mobile application meets our customers’ demands by coupling the ability to manage printing needs from your fingertips while achieving high-quality output results.”

To achieve full connectivity with Canon printers you will need to first download the BlackBerry app and second you will need to have a Canon imageRUNNER Multi Function printer. With this new system from Canon and the ability to use Print to Go on the BlackBerry PlayBook, we truly have the ability for a paperless world

If you tend to use Google Docs on a regular basis you may well be interested in GDocs which has arrived in BlackBerry App World.
The application allows you to manage, access and upload documents straight from your BlackBerry, which will come in handy for many users.
There are three versions of the app available in App World: a free version, GDocs Pro and GDocs Premium. I am slightly confused to what the differences are to be honest as all three application descriptions are identical, making it hard to tell what the benefits of the paid editions are. I am currently playing around with the free version and not only does it seem to be a great app but the UI is beautiful and very user friendly.

Features in GDocs include:

  • Search and filter your document list
  • Star, share and filter your document list
  • View docs in offline mode
  • Download documents to your device
  • Move unwanted documents to the trash and restore if required
  • Upload files from your device to Google Docs
  • Create new documents and edit them without using the browser
  • Take a photo and convert the image to a text document
  • Full screen view of documents for easy reading
  • Send documents via email or Bluetooth
  • Update the documents online

Mr. Handsfree

All summer long I love being outside. On the beach, at the park or even just on my patio. Having my music along with me is key -- and for that I love having a Bluetooth speaker along for the ride. All my music is stored on my BlackBerry, so I just connect to my speaker and crank up the tunes no matter where I am. Portable speakers like the Mr. Handsfree Blue Beat Bluetooth Wireless Speakers have awesome battery life and pretty good sound for their size. So if you plan on heading out this summer, I highly suggest picking some up.

Patent

Another day and another patent filed by Research in Motion. This time it is something quite bizarre. The word on the street is that the new patent uses a technology to detect the users emotion. How this will be achieved we are not entirely sure. An element of camera, screen sensors or even magic may well be involved. If the patent is granted could we see BlackBerry users having their emotions detected by their BlackBerry 10 smartphone and adjusting the text accordingly?

It strikes me as a very odd thing to do but from what Thorsten Heins has told us about the forthcoming new operating system it is quite clear they are thinking out of the box and there will be some game changing features included. I wouldn't hold your breath for this one though. The patent process is a long and grueling business.
