Minecraft Xbox 360 update: "Adventure" update is "the most difficult"

"We're looking forward to the challenge!" says 4J Studios

4J Studios' Paddy Burns has shared a little more info with OXM on forthcoming Minecraft Xbox 360 updates. Feel like you've seen everything Mojang's world-building sim has to offer? Brace yourself, presumptuous soul, for the enigmatic sorcery of hydraulics.

4J's first Minecraft Xbox 360 update will be version 1.7.3 - not version 1.7.2, as previously reported - and pistons are the big additions, allowing you to shunt stacks or rows of blocks around to create (for instance) extendible sandstone willies. Don't act like you weren't thinking it.

As impressive as the functionality sounds, this is actually one of the easier updates. "We're implementing the features from the Beta 1.7.3 version at the moment, and it's nowhere near as tricky as the 1.8.2 changes will be," Burns told OXM. "There are no big architecture changes with the move to 1.7.3, so it's been quite straightforward. The move to 1.8.2 is much more challenging."

Dubbed the "Adventure update", Minecraft 1.8 isn't so much an expansion as an entirely new game. It adds Creative Mode, which gives players invulnerability, infinite blocks and the power of flight, plus a host of mechanics that are designed to make Survival Mode feel more like a classic dungeon-crawler.

You'll have a new stamina gauge to reckon with, replenished by eating things, plus new enemies like the Endermen, the ability to parry attacks, optional NPC villages and vast underground strongholds, stocked with rare items and materials. On the technical side, expect a revamped lighting system. Read the full list of content over on the Minecraft wiki.

"This is going to be the most difficult update due to the sheer amount of changes, and also the underlying architecture changes that come with it. We're looking forward to the challenge!" Burns reflected.

4J has a degree of control over which Minecraft PC features make the cut, he went on. "We are working with Daniel Kaplan at Mojang to define what is going in to the Xbox version, but the aim is to include as many of the PC features that make sense on the Xbox as possible. The game isn't Minecraft on the Xbox, it is Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, so it isn't really a direct port of the PC game."

  1. Any word on time schedule for updates?

I built the beginning of Shadow Moses, only to find no snow in my biome. Restart. Now I'm making a Shadow Moses inspired place in a snowy biome, and turned my old SM into a castle and hopefully a theme park one day.

  2. Wow,fantastic they are taking loads of care and attention over it.I myself can't wait for 1.8,some of the tutorials i watched before it was out on 360 show a few of those, brilliant stuff.I was already obsessed, there is only Max kept me off it for a week.

Also Ed,has OXMwood packed in ?.

  3. My latest creation now i have been to the nether and in the desert is a sandstone fortress with glo blocks in it.O n top off the biggest sand hill on the map.It also has a tower on it with spiral staircase, and a totally glass roof. There is also a diving pool with a spiral staircase diving tower with a diving board and platform.Plus a wood, open to the elements jacuzzi, that keeps getting raided by chickens for some reason.

Forgot the tower is made out off Obsidian so a sort off black/white effect.

And the nether portal is in the cellar.Makes a fair bit of noise as well.

  4. Any news on the possibilty of increasing the size limit of the world? I know they aren't exactly tiny but compared to the near infinite size of PC maps an increase would be welcome.

  5. In order of the asking: there's no word on update release dates as yet; OXMwood is the Property of Matt and I accordingly refer you to his scrutiny; I think there's a world size upgrade in one of the PC versions, but I don't know whether anything similar is planned for the Xbox 360 edition.

  6. I would think it is quite away down the road before we get the bigger maps.Hopefully they can pull it off on the 360.

  7. So is "Adventure Mode" talked about in the article just the "Adventure Update", this time for the 360 version? I ask because the often requested and talked about "Adventure Mode" is a separate thing from the 1.8 Adventure Update. The Mode would theoretically be a mode in which blocks are unbreakable, the idea being adventure maps with limited rule set. The Adventure Update was the update name.

I know, I know, I'm being "that guy", but there is a difference between the two. Unless this update to the 360 version is allowing the users to pick between the pre-Adventure Update content and post-Adventure Update content (Thus being an actual "mode")...which is something many PC players would kill for.

Fair point! I'll update the piece.

I think there's nothing wrong with wanting the promises that Notch gave us. It's sort of a pity that Minecraft became such a big success as it is because all this money, contracts and other corporate rubbish has meant he has had to break many of this promises.

I still await the day we get a working sound engine, adventure mode, zombie survival mode and NPC's that DO something, rather than just move around pointlessly. I also want my free copy of the android and xbox copies but he used his money and his smugness to sidestep the alpha question saying that it's a "different engine" meaning that it some how does not apply? He has too much money and popularity for his own good. Though I don't have the xbox version yet I love the idea of things like split screen and easy to join co-op. Stuff the original one should have.

Maybe he will make some new games (as in ones he has managed from start to finish) and then we will see what a meh programmer and game creator he is. After all a bunch of things like pistons are just stolen from modders.

  10. Does this mean we get to push OXM off high cliffs with giant extending parsnips? :D

  11. You misunderstood my point. I was simply pointing out the article may have mislabeled the update name. And you are aware Notch hasn't been the active developer since around Christmas, right? Also...have you seen any modern game do split-screen on a PC/Mac? Easy to join co-op is coming in 1.3, trading with villagers seems likely to come in 1.3 (Jeb/Jens tweeted a pic of him working on what looks to be a trading system), the modders were more than willing to let Mojang use the mods in-game, so by "stolen" you mean "freely given", and they never promised you would get all versions on all devices, what they promised was all versions on the personal computer version. Now, if you can find them promising to give all alpha purchases the mobile and 360 version, I'll eat my words, but I suspect you really won't be able to find it.

Now, Adventure Mode is something they were talking about for a while and I hope it shows up sooner rather than later, (though I think the community made a whole lot more out of it than what Mojang ever really promised) and I would love to see a real sound system implemented. I couldn't give two shits about more zombie-stuff, though (I'm kinda zombied out...).

  12. It's a shame Minecraft on Xbox does not have infinite worlds. Survivalcraft (see http://kaalus.wordpress.com) on Windows Phone 7 handles infinite worlds without breaking a sweat. And all that on a single-core, low powered phone CPU with 90MB per-app memory limit.

I know what you mean, it was great on the pc to wander endlessly and find all sorts of crazy landscapes, sometimes even hovering platforms for some reason but there's Minecraft physics for you. If they finda way to create these infinate worlds on the 360, which should be possible, then that'll be excellent news.

  14. I want it now you hear me. Now god damn it. Ed make it so. Pretty please, with some sugar on top.

This game has ruined my life since it came out. Me and the wife sit there playing it all night, after the Kids are soundo of course. We have at least 3 different worlds that have shit in basically. I did make a mobs trap but it needs expanding, a lot! And I've built half a castle, and half a sign. Would've done more except those pesky caves got you all sorts of lost :x and you end up going round in circles, only to remember that you came in through a hole and didn't put stairs there. The kids love it too, although they prefer the iPad version where you get infinite blocks, they have some really great ideas too, better then me.

  15. I just want animal breeding. Wool is way too hard to come by!

4J have said that the update to 1.7.3 will be in the "Summer".

They post a bit on www.minecraftforum.net, which is quite cool.

  17. It seems that Minecraft is second only to COD:MW3 on the most popular games being played on Live.Wow knocking Blops off second. No great suprise for me,what in essence seems like a simple game,is a right life drainer, lol.

Tell me about it. If I didn't have kids and a ball and chain, Minecraft would be my life. I've spent more hours on Minecraft this last week then what I ever did playing Blops or MW3, and I love shooters

 You have gotta love it though.Suprisingly moreish. The "i will just spend ten more mins.mining this gold, obsidian, etc i have found, blimey it's three in the morning",lol.

  20. Me and the brother have been making Dragonsreach from Skyrim, with the intent of then creating the rest of Whiterun.

It has been an incredible challenge largely down to fact that Bethesda created a Tardis, as the interior doesn't match the exterior, with some doors in the centre of the building teleporting you to the top right hand corner.

But its going well, with the rear of the building with a balcony and church-like hall at the back completed, and we are now making the main hall.

  21. Its really nice seeing this great influx of people trying Minecraft for the first time, I remember it was a great feeling and I'm glad so many more people are experiencing it.

Wouldn't creative mode make it incredibly easy to get the achievements though? I played the trial version and got about 6 achievements in 5 minutes, so unless they blocked achievements on creative it would be too easy. Then again, I suppose I knew what I was doing, so for new players the achievements will be harder on survival.

I was watching the England game last night and at half time thought to myself "just a quick foray into the mines grab some ore and out" half 12 the missus says "are you coming to bed?" and "what happened to the football?" :?

  23. :"what happened to the football?" :?

You didn't miss much, one goal in the first five minutes and as you probably know. The rest of the match was just pushing a ball around a field for 85 minutes. You made a good call playing Minecraft.
I only wish I could get those 85 minutes back...

  24. just fyi if you want to make natural stone you put cobblestone into a furnace and generally you get regular stone back. sometimes it does get destroyed though.

As you pointed out getting 6 in no time, I have 18 and just need the saddles and rails. The achievements are easy enough without worrying about creative mate.

I'm actually quite glad the map's fairly limited, given I've managed to get lost twice...

  27. do we have to have the hunger bar added to the 360 edition, i really dont like the regening health idea for this game it removes the challenge of having to carry items to heal, just hide while health refills thats no fun, and the fact i need to open inventory when i want to see armour health because the meter above health doesnt fill right up unless wearing diamond armour it doesnt deplete unless it breaks. dont get me wrong i love the pc version it has great features but having health automatically regenerate, hmmm. If this is added when the adventure update eventually comes out itll spoil the game for me remove it and ill love it

The hunger feature annoys me the most.
The adventure update means that food no longer heals you, it only suppresses hunger which can be very annoying when you normally eat frequently to heal from fall damage, and on the odd occasion you don't eat, you die from hunger (very annoying when you are trying to build something).

  29. I personally prefer the hunger system on the PC Minecraft, it adds a new level to the game in the sense that keeping a farm for baking bread, or breeding cows/pigs/chickens etc makes the game much more indepth and more tactical.

In a world with my cousins, we've built a wheat farm to manage our health, but the fact that food doesn't stack is annoying.

  30. My friends and I made a fully functioning theme park on Minecraft for Xbox 360. Check out the video on youtube ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu3gPfxz ... re=g-all-u
