In 2011, Kinder's pipeline company, Kinder Morgan, agreed to acquire El Paso Corp. for $38 billion in cash, stock and assumed debt. The combined company will boast some 80,000 miles of pipelines. Kinder's bet is that the booming growth of shale plays will generate massive new volumes of oil and gas for his pipelines to bring to market. Kinder's personal fortune has benefited already from a run-up in shares. A former Army captain, Kinder quit as Enron president in 1996 and built a pipeline company with friend William Morgan.
