Phil Knight has swooshed into the top 20 richest Americans billionaires for the first time in 15 years as his sports apparel empire continues to outperform. While the rest of the sports world was ignoring Jeremy Lin, Nike struck a 3-year contract with the underrated phenom in 2010?2 years before Linsanity struck the nation. In February, as the 23-year-old turned around the New York Knicks' losing streak, Nike wisely extended Lin's contract. In 2011, the firm signed boxing champion Manny Pacquiao and released a "Pacman" product line similar to Michael Jordan's. Knight, a former University of Oregon track star, founded Blue Ribbon sports in 1964, selling Japanese running shoes out of the trunk of his car at track meets on the weekends while teaching accounting at Portland State. He renamed his company Nike after the Greek goddess of Victory in 1971 and paid then-graphic design student Carolyn Davidson $35 to design the company's iconic swoosh logo. Travis, Knight's son, serves as president and CEO of Knight's stop-motion film studio, Laika. The studio released its first feature film, Coraline, in 2009; plans to release its second film, ParaNorman, in the summer of 2012, and has bought the film rights to Wildwood, the novel by the lead singer of the Decemberists. The Knight Management Center at Stanford University opened this past May. The eight-building complex cost a reported $345 million to construct; Knight contributed $105 million. [...] more
