A pioneer in drilling the Bakken shale of North Dakota, Hamm thinks the project has the potential to yield 24 billion barrels of oil in the decades to come. He believes the region could produce more than 1 million barrels per day within five years. Hamm owns 70% of the publicly traded shares of Oklahoma City-based Continental Resources, the company with the most acreage in the region. In 2011, Continental's production volumes grew at a blistering 43%. A down-to-earth guy, Hamm favors burgers at Sonic and drives his own pick-up truck. He has signed Bill Gates' and Warren Buffet's Giving Pledge, promising to give away more than half of his fortune.
