A massive wildfile raging just outside of Colorado Springs, Colo., doubled in size between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

The flames now cover more than 24 square miles — roughly the size of Manhattan — in and around the Waldo Canyon area. Thirty-two-thousand residents have been ordered to flee their homes for safer ground, while an unknown number of houses have already been destroyed, according to an Associated Press report.

Despite firefighter’s efforts on the ground and in the air, the blaze continues to spread due to hot, dry and windy weather. As the Waldo Canyon fire puts homes, businesses and lives at risk, local residents have been using Twitter and Instagram to post pictures, prayers, and messages of hope for firefighters, neighbors and loved ones.

  1. Crazy pictures! This is all I’ve been hearing about and seeing all over the news living here in CO. Came across this posting on my Facebook newsfeed and wanted to share because more support during this time is only going to help!

“Our hearts go out to all of the families and individuals affected by the fires here in Colorado. In an effort to show our support, we’re going to donate 50% of our proceeds to help! Be a part of the movement by simply purchasing your very own decommissioned firehose belt here: https://gumroad.com/l/AOIN

  2. It’s wild to watch a city burn down right after they cut funding to the very social services that could have potentially helped stop the fire. All to save money on property taxes for homes that no longer exist after this fire. Surreal, ironic and sad.

  3. Instagram filters have no place in photo-journalism. Iphonography does, but some of those filters are bastardizations of the truth.

  4. This is journalism in digital era – everyone can be a journalist if you are at the scene and have a means to produce and communicate message.

  5. That is an awfully quick time for a fire to double in size! Scary to think how big it could grow at that rate. 6. A few of these are taken by photojournalists for news publications that people filtered through instagram. Can’t stop someone from sharing a photo – and nothing wrong doing so – but credit needs to be given where credit is due, or at least not given to others.

  7. oh goodness, praying that all the families have found safe ground and no one has been hurt, its much worse than i thought,

  8. I follow breaking American news stories from the UK and have been amazed how quickly twitter and instagram etc have been able to convey up to the minute changes in a breaking story, they provide a practical and sometimes life saving flow of news, the traditional news media are slow moving and mostly seem to be asleep.

  9. This is a great site.Thanks.
