Ex-Nokia employees have banded together to form a new start-up company, with plans to release a smartphone based on the Nokia-developed MeeGo operating system.

Former MeeGo engineer Marc Dillon will serve as the chief operating officer of the company, which is called Jolla, leading a team of "directors and core professionals from Nokia's MeeGo N9 organisation", according to a statement.
"Nokia created something wonderful — the world's best smartphone product. It deserves to be continued, and we will do that together with all the bright and gifted people contributing to the MeeGo success story."
Jolla will continue this legacy, with the team hoping to expand its numbers by hiring from within the ranks of the MeeGo enthusiast community.
MeeGo was originally created as a partnership between Intel and Nokia, bringing together two separate Linux-based projects created by each company individually: Moblin and MaeMo. This partnership was intended to create a platform that was suitable for a number of device categories, including tablets, netbooks and smartphones, but the Nokia N9 was the only commercially available product to run on the MeeGo platform.
