Daughter's Salute To Dad Is Shared By All On Father's Day

DEAR ABBY: It's Father's Day and I'd like to salute one particular unsung hero -- my dad. He was there for me and my sister despite a difficult workload throughout our childhood. He has always been generous with love and affection, and I have no doubt that he has sacrificed things he wanted personally for our benefit.

Dad has been the calming voice during times of strife. He can fix anything from a broken washing machine to a broken heart. He has not only nurtured us, but our children as well.

He has been our role model when it comes to setting an example of what a man, husband, father and grandfather should be. He is never judgmental and has always shown us the best in ourselves. He's consistent in his love of God, country and family. He is patient, kind, generous and smart in ways I only wish I could be.

To top it off, he found us the best mother we could have hoped for. They have been married 58 years. My unsung hero doesn't wear a cape, but I do believe he has certainly earned a halo. -- SHARON IN BRANDON, FLA.

DEAR SHARON: What a sweet letter. I'm printing it to honor not only your father but also the millions of men who dedicate themselves daily to raising their children with love and support. In addition, I'd like to extend a Happy Father's Day to fathers everywhere -- not only birth fathers but also stepfathers, foster fathers and those caring individuals who mentor youngsters whose parents are absent or deceased.

    Bless you all.

DEAR ABBY: Will you please help librarians across the country clarify something that is generally misrepresented to the public?

Patrons who need assistance operating a computer may be able to get help at their local library. That's "may," not "can." Too often, people are instructed to go to their library and use a computer to file taxes, redeem a gift, print pictures, etc. The fact is, not every library has computers with Internet access. Most do, but not all.

Further, many libraries lack sufficient staff to offer one-on-one support to operate a computer. To someone who is proficient, it may seem strange that a person can't simply lay a hand on a mouse and go. The reality is, computers and the Internet are not intuitive to those who haven't been exposed to them -- and there are many.

While I don't know of a librarian who wouldn't like to offer unlimited assistance to computer users, libraries nationwide are losing staff due to budget cuts. At the same time, use of libraries is steadily increasing. It's frustrating to disappoint patrons who expect to receive instruction in computer operation. We prefer they leave our building happy.

So, Abby, please spread the word. Computers and Internet services vary from library to library. Readers should ask their librarian about what services are available at their local branch. -- CONCERNED CITIZEN, EASTHAMPTON, MASS.

DEAR CONCERNED CITIZEN: Thank you for shining a light on this important subject.

Readers, if this letter is as disturbing to you as it is to me, write your congressional representative and express your concern. For lower- and middle-income people of every age, libraries have performed -- and continue to perform -- a vital function. Their budgets must not be slashed to the point that they can no longer fulfill their mission of informing and educating the public.

The library's mission is not to educate the public. It's to assist the public in educating themselves.

Nicely said, except the grammar police would like to point out that "public" is a singular neuter noun and takes a singular pronoun. "Itself", please. The inability to use "number" (is a noun or pronoun singular or plural?) is a serious pet peeve of mine. Other than that, total agreement.
      • Bevilaqua 13 days ago
Tiger Lily, the real grammar police would like to point out that you're correct about the rule in American English, but not British English.

Well, I'm an editor, and not only is it acceptable to treat most collective nouns either way, only a pedant would insist otherwise. ("My family are visiting."/"My family is visiting.")

I wish more fathers truly understood the enormous impact they have on their daughters' lives. When I was about ten years old, I wrote a couple poems and stories. My dad was so proud, he took them to work to show his friends. In that moment I knew I would be a writer for the rest of my life.

I got a lump in my throat reading that, Rebecca. A thousand thumbs up.

Here is a great opportunity for computer savvy patrons to donate same volunteer time teaching computer skills to the patrons that need them .

In our county, the public libraries were closed in 2009. People formed a nonprofit and with donations and many volunteers, we opened our own library system! We have all the services found in public libraries, plus story time, a poetry group, movie night, presentations, art displays, and more. Our communities are dedicated to having a library system now more than ever. We have one of the few PRIVATE libraries in the nation. Don't expect a lot from any library unless YOU are willing to give of your time, money, talent or expertise to your own library to keep it open, make it interesting to all ages, make it a gathering place, and thereby enrich your community, as we do in the poorest county in Oregon!

I am a librarian, and I could not agree more. I'm happy to assist people when they need computer assistance, but do not always have time to assist someone who is totally not computer literate. Unfortunately, just about all job applications are online these days. The library where I work has had funding cut to the bone, and we very very little money from our community. State funding is drying up, too. We do our best, but please be patient.

My suggestion to all librarians is to find someone who is good with computers, like a retiree, and ask them to volunteer once or twice a week for a couple of hours and get the word out to adult patrons. And play with the computer. Play free cell to get used to the mouse. Surf around. You can't break the computer. Lots of adults are reluctant to use the computer because they think they'll mess it up. You won't. And if you do, I cn fix it.

Also, I am not an accountant and I will not do your taxes. I don't even do my own. I have an accountant. I'd hate to mess up your taxes, and we would not like the possible liabilities involved.

Talk to your Congressman, and your local government leaders about the moor trance of the local library. We are more than just books.

Also do not forget to make an occasional donation, I know most of us are strapped right now but if we each gave just a little, it would really make a difference.
Also those of you who know how to use the computer, when you see someone struggling lend a hand. I am fortunate to have internet at home now but have had to use the library. When I saw someone struggling I was always happy to offer help.

Happy Father's Day to all who fill that role.
And Happy Father's Day to all the mothers who had to step up and fill the role.

I agree! I have a cousin who had 4 small kids she couldn't/didn't want to care for (no father in the picture). My aunt took in those kids, was mother and father to them, managed to send them all to college. She passed away after the youngest one graduated.
      • Susan B 12 days ago
Thanks, Tree. I appreciate the pat on the back. My kids' sperm donor reappeared in their lives after I raised them. I'm proud to say that they eventually accepted him and now have a good relationship with him and his family. I, of course, am excruciatingly polite to him when I have to see him. It does me good to see him tense up, knowing he doesn't deserve my kindness, the toad.

My two best friends and I all raised our children virtually alone. We always send each other Father's Day cards.

L1 - My pops always said "If you can't laugh at yourself, you might miss the best joke of the day!" I think that's pretty good advice ; )

Being a Texas A&M Aggie, I love Aggie jokes. Many do not. But how can we not laugh at ourselves? I can pull some pretty stupid stuff without even trying.

People who hog the library staff's time are right up there with people who hog the waffle irons in motel breakfast rooms. Libraries are the first on the list when it's time for budget cuts, and they depend heavily on part-timers and volunteers. To everyone who donates or works with Friends of the Library, thank you!!!!!

I just wish I appreciated my father when I was a creepy, self centered, angst ridden kid as much as I do now. He gave us, taught us and showed us a lot. He was a good man and a good father. And, damm, did her ever have a slick sense of humor :-)
    • susannah  •  13 days ago
While I can understand that busy librarians can become frustrated if people want to take up too much time seeking computer help, the bigger truth is indeed that too many libraries are struggling to stay open and current. I feel that libraries are vital to community support in many, many ways. Support your local library!

LW #1, LOL! I guess he is no longer an unsung hero. Congratulations on having a great father and kudos to him.

One final word. It is nice to see someone write about how great someone in his or her life is and not have to then read "...but he is a jerk in such and such a way....".

Some people here today seem to be in a darker mood, I hope everyone here can find a little peace and happiness today.

Life isn't perfect but it still has beautiy in it :)

      Everyone have a great day.

My father has been gone since 1978. I miss him just as much now as I did then, and often think about having him in my life at the various stages of life I've been through since.
So when people gripe about their fathers, I remind them of what I'd give, how far I'd go, what I'd do, to have FIVE GODDANG MINUTES with my dad.

I worked for a small town library. The rural town was in Indiana. They had two ancient computers for the patrons. They only had one person working, we had a ton of stuff to do. It isn't just that a lot of the people were computer illiterate. We had people who would come expecting us to do what they needed done for THEM. Say they would be applying for a job online or type out a resume. They would come in thinking it was our jobs NOT to teach them but to do it for them. I had some who basically insisted I was to be right by their side as they wanted me to teach them this and that, tell them what something meant on a web site. They didn't get we can NOT do that. They expected us to be at their beck and call. They did not get that we had other patrons other than themselves. The Librarian finally had to put up a sign and we just started telling people that we may show them the very basics of operating. However, if we were busy we can't and we were unable to walk people through web sites or resume building, etc....

I do remember one issue. I had a man who had to fax something. I asked him for the phone number of where it was to be faxed. He did not get that he needed a phone number. kept explaining over and over WHY we needed a phone number and then what a fax machine was and why we needed the number. He said he would come back because he felt that I should just know what to do. He came back and went through the same thing with the Librarian.

You described my dad too! He is 89 and 9 months! We are having a dinner for him today. We pick strawberries and blueberries, butter beans, and peaches together, go to the rodeo together and feed eather other's cats when one of us is out of town. Love you DAD!

Just like a librarian is not there to help you learn to read, she/he is not there to teach you computer sciences.

I was an honors student in high school. I won several lucrative academic scholarship awards, and my father took me downtown to open a bank account to keep that money in. He had to be the co-signer since I was a minor. When I was halfway through college, he went into that bank account and withdrew all of the money and spent it on gambling debts he had. Forgive me if I don't get all nostalgic on Father's Day.

We just got back from the Zoo, enjoying the nature, wonderful animals, and fed the giraffes. My beautiful, wonderful husband lifted his boys so they could see the cool things hiding in the trees, and we all had an awesome time. I noticed all the other wonderful fathers with their children, serenely taking in the sights and enjoying their children, snapping pictures of their children's every move (as did my husband), and gently but firmly discipline them when the climbed on the wooden rails. One little child from another family fell, and his father scooped him up, held and consoled him, rubbing his little scruffy head as he wailed in his shoulder. Some fathers were with their adult sons and daughters, who had children of their own, pulling them in wagons packed with juice and snacks. I only wish that the rest of the world had good fathers, because the world would be a heck of a lot less screwed up. To my husband: I love you angel. To my dad: I love you! I am truly blessed. I wish all the fathers out there in abbyland well, and a long and happy life.

Our middle and high schoolers teach a free basic computing class at the school twice a year. They get class credit, learn to teach, and people in the community get an opportunity to learn these skills.

Thanks to my dad for everything...he was never afraid to say "no", he didn't mind upsetting me. My tears and blabbing about why I should get my way didn't move him (or so it seemed). He calmly and simply explained "I want better for you, but YOU should want better for yourself." I still miss him.
