Couple Headed For The Altar Trips Over Boyfriend's Fling

DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend, "Wally," and I have been friends for several years, and a couple for nearly two. He recently brought up the subject of marriage, and we agreed that we are likely altar-bound.

Only one thing gives me pause. A few months ago, Wally got plastered and had a fling with a female friend. He regretted it immediately and said it was what made him realize I am "The One." (He is getting help for his drinking now.)

The problem is, the woman is still pursuing him. She buys him gifts or brings him vegan meals. He has asked her repeatedly to stop, to no avail. Because Wally is a vegetarian and I'm not, I suspect she's trying to prove she would be a better partner for him.

I have asked Wally to cut off contact with her, but he won't. He feels bad for her because she has few friends and lives in an isolated little town. What do you suggest I do? -- UNWILLING TO SHARE

DEAR UNWILLING TO SHARE: Raise the subject of marriage with Wally again, and tell him his continued contact with the woman he cheated with is hurtful to you and a threat to your relationship. Ask how he would feel if you continued to see and accept gifts from a man you'd had a drunken fling with. If he says he wouldn't be thrilled, perhaps he'll be able to understand your reaction to what's going on. If he says he'd be fine with it, then Wally isn't the man for you.

DEAR ABBY: My 13-year-old niece, "Amelia," is a beautiful young girl. She has only two flaws -- she lies constantly and she's boy-crazy. I have to listen to my sister talk on and on about how hard it is to trust her. My sister and brother-in-law have set many rules and limits for my niece. I think her punishments for breaking rules fit the crime -- grounding, having things taken away, etc.

Amelia knows she can't have a boyfriend until she's 16. Lately, she keeps trying to get boys' phone numbers and meet with them. She has also been caught sexting three times and lying about it. As her punishment this time, my sister and her husband shaved Amelia's head. I am shocked and devastated for my niece. I think it was extremely inappropriate.

When I try to talk to my sister about my concerns, she tells me she had no choice because her daughter had so many warnings. I don't know what to do. I think my niece will need counseling. My sister says I am overreacting. Am I? Or did she? -- WORRIED AUNT IN UTAH

DEAR WORRIED AUNT: Amelia's parents went off the deep end. What was done to her was awful, and you are not overreacting. Instead of shaving her daughter's head, your sister should have tried to understand why she is lying and desperately seeking attention from boys.

If I ever heard of a family in need of family therapy, it is your sister's. Love, attention and less draconian punishments are what Amelia needs, not months of public shaming.

DEAR ABBY: My husband committed suicide 20 years ago. He left a note, but I never shared it with our children, as they were very young at the time. They are all happy, successful adults. Should I share the note with them? I still have it. -- ANONYMOUS DOWN SOUTH

DEAR ANONYMOUS: Your children are probably curious about why their father chose to end his life. Let them know the note exists, share it with them if they would like to see it and answer any questions they may have. They have a right to know.

Shaving the kid's head shows how those parents have lost it. This is so close to child abuse that I wouldn't blame the kid for reporting them to the police -- maybe that's where the sister should start.

I am so tired of women staying with a cheater. I am a 53 year old man and have never cheated. Ladies, if a man tells you how sorry he is, it's because he's sorry he got caught. In my opinion, if more women would dump a cheater then maybe some men will wise up. I was cheated on once. That was the last day she ever saw me. Some things you must have zero tolerance.

I never buy it when a man claims "it's all her." Unless Wally is shoving food and presents back at her and blocking her calls, it is NOT all her. "Feeling sorry" for someone is one of the oldest excuses in the book. Run, Toto, run.

My sister dated a guy like that for 7 years before they got engaged. He was always buying trinkets for "Tina" when he & my sister were on vacation, talking about what a hard family life she had, he only went to the party with her because she had to work, etc. Then came the night he called her sobbing that Tina was pregnant and he didn't know what to do. After ignoring my sister's calls for weeks (she had had to move because of her job), she called his mom who broke down and sobbed, "Oh I wanted to tell you, but he wouldn't let me call you. They got married a few weeks ago!" I told her that baby was a blessing in disguise.

LW#2 - Why the hell does "Amelia" still have a cell phone to sext with??
      • Rachelle 9 days ago
        My thoughts exactly!
      • M 5 days ago
I think she needs more kind attention from her parents instead of constant punishments. Maybe she has a lot of unsupervised time, which is obviously too much responsibility for her since she is using the time as stated in the letter.
      • Andrea 5 days ago
Amelia is being abused, probably sexually and probably by her father or other man. She's seeking help by acting out and no one is listening and her parents respond by shaving her head? WOW!
    • Yahoo User  •  6 days ago
LW!-the problem is not that the woman continues to pursue him, the problem is that he cheated on you. He uses drunkenness as an excuse, but he still cheated.

LW2-the girl's parents reacted inappropriately. They should have taken her phone away. If she has a computer, they should have taken that away as well and not let her have any access to any computer connected to the internet. If she is sexting at 13, then they should think twice about letting her date at sixteen. Otherwise, she is sure to make it to MTV in no time.

"I have asked Wally to cut off contact with her, but he won't. "

No guy refuses to cut off contact with someone just because he feels sorry for them. He's getting something out of the deal. That's why he won't cut off contact. Does someone need to draw a picture for you?
      • MeechieD 10 days ago

#1 Well isn't that nice for Wally? He's got 2 desperate females on the hook, and believe me, Sweetie, you are desperate if you will put up with this situation. Let the other female have Wally, you go out and find someone with some ethics before both of you women end up pregnant at the same time and Wally leaves both of you.
      • DavidD 9 days ago
Too bad polygamy is banned in the US. If it were in a couple of countries in the Middle East 2 very pregnant females would have been seen as a blessing! LOL!
      • OomYaaqub 9 days ago
Well, if you're going to get involved in a polygamous relationship you should actually LIKE the third party, because in a way you'd be marrying her, too.
      • Shallow Guy 8 days ago
How do these scumbags get away with it?
    • Zara Mikazuki  •  10 days ago
LW#1 - Lay it out straight to him. He slept with this woman, he cheated on you, you are planning to marry him, so you don't want him to keep contact with the woman he cheated on you with. Word it like that. Make sure you STRESS the cheating part of it. If that doesn't affect him, then nothing will.

Actually, I also like Abby's idea. Ask him if he'd be okay with you keeping in constant contact with a man you had a drunken fling with.

LW1 - Wally likes to play the field. Not ready to be a mate. Pass him by.
    • damaris  •  10 days ago
Lw1. So. Let me get this straight. He got drunk enough to lose coherence (Strike one) or he is lying about how drunk he was (Strike one). Slept with some girl. (Strike two) And now, doesn't want to get rid of her (Strike three) Do you really need help figuring this one out? Really?

My daughter went a little crazy with her online and obscene texts a couple times, I just suspended her phone and changed the wifi password for a month....It worked like a charm!

A man who is truly remorseful about his faithlessness makes every effort to repair the damage he causes his relationship. That would include cutting off all contact with the other woman, not making excuses for ongoing contact. He doesen't respect you. Leave before you have children and a reason to have a lifetime of contact with a man who will never respect you. I speak from experience. Grieve what you hoped you would have with this man and start something clean and new with someone else. It will be worth it in the end. It is hard to keep your self respect when you live with someone who loves you, but doesen't respect you.

A vegan drunk named Wallly? Cut your losses and run kid.....
    • *  •  10 days ago
She needs to ditch this guy now. Once a cheat, always a cheat. She will save herself a lot of future heartache. He is not the one! Move on and find someone who does not lie, blame alcohol, cheat and need his supposed ex. He is loving the attention. MOVE ON! Put the loser behind you and have some self respect!

To Anonymous Down South....I would say YES inform your kids of their father's suicide. My favortie uncle committed suicide when I was about 7-8 years old. I was 28 y.o. before I found out the truth that he had died in that manner, and it was my wife who told me, then. All my family wouldn't tell me, but they told her. But even today, NO ONE has told me why. And sadly, there is only one survivor who could tell me and she wont.

Instead of shaving the girls head, taking away her cell phone permanently and moving the computer into an area of the house it can be closely policed would work better. The computer can be locked when there is NO supervision. Therapy to find out why the girl lies and why she is sexting would also help. Is it possible the girl was molested? Some girls are boy crazy at a young age and look for attention. Some girls have been molested and are promiscuous at an early age. She needs help!

LW #1 - It sounds like Wally is keeping someone around 'just in case'. I'm not a real fan of ultimatums, but here's a situation where one would be warranted. Just my opinion...

      Dear Unwilling to Share,
Perhaps you should have one of your guy friends deliver you a few meals with extra meat. Then, perhaps your boyfriend will understand.

LW#1 - The writing is on the wall, you are just refusing to read it. He had a drunken fling with a woman and now claims he has asked her to leave him alone, but won't cut off contact with her despite the request of the person he supposedly loves and thinks is "the One". You are the one all right, one of many. If you honestly believe he is marriage material, you are kidding yourself.
