design*sponge at home is officially out!

After two years of hard work, editing, photoshoots, endless all-nighters, Design*Sponge at Home is officially out! I thought writing that sentence would knock me off my feet, but to be honest I don’t think it’s hit me yet. It’s hard to describe what it’s like to work on something so consistently for two years and see every element of it slowly come together. To finally have it finalized, in print, and in stores feels like a dream. A beautiful dream, but still a dream. It’s raining cats and dogs here in Brooklyn today, so as soon as it lets up I’m going to sneak around like a dork and see if I can find a copy in my local book store. I think the moment I see the shiny gold cover and the silly blog name I typed into Blogger.com seven years ago it will feel real. But right now I can’t believe we actually did it!

The book was (as still is) the biggest team effort I’ve ever undertaken so I just wanted to thank everyone involved for every ounce of energy, support and inspiration they brought to the pages of Design*Sponge at Home. People keep telling me that this is the publishing version of giving birth and if that’s the case, the “in need of a long nap” part is definitely accurate. But until that nap comes around (I think that will be in December after the book tour) I’m so excited to finally be able to share what we’ve been working on so hard for the past two years. This book was really about facing all of my biggest fears (Would anyone actually pay for something after reading D*S for free for this long? Does anything I say really deserve to be printed? Can I push myself hard enough to make my deadlines and beat my harshest critic- myself?) and doing the best I could to tackle them. I have the utmost respect for anyone who’s ever written a book- this process was harder than I could have ever imagined. But I have a feeling that getting to meet all of you out there in person on the book tour will be the most exciting and rewarding way to celebrate ever. I just can’t wait to hit the road, start crafting and see you all.

Thank you so much again for your support. To all of you who have purchased, wish-listed or even thought about picking up a copy of Design*Sponge at Home- thank you. Your support has really made all of this possible and all of us here at D*S are so grateful.

I’m heading out to prep for this weekend’s first book tour event, but until then, you can read more about the book, the book tour and find links to buy the book right here (store links are on the right hand side of the page) on the book page. Whether you pick up a copy at your local book shop or order online, I hope you’ll enjoy flipping through these pages as much as we enjoyed creating them. xo, grace

d*s book tour: philadelphia (part 2) event details!

The Design*Sponge at Home book tour is coming to a close, and I am so excited to announce our final US event!** We started with Philadelphia on our first leg of the tour, and we’re bringing it back home for one final event at a very special place: the Anthropologie Home Office. If you’ve ever read or heard about this space, you know how amazing it is. It is the headquarters of the whole URBN brand, and it’s a spectacular space to throw one last blowout event and DIY celebration.

For this event, we’ll do a special DIY project that’s different from those done at the other book tour events. We’ll be teaching people how to make their own gorgeous holiday wreaths using all sorts of local flora and odds and ends that we’re collecting from our favorite shops. Each attendee will go home with a stunning wreath to use in their own home or give away as a gift (we’ll provide a range of pretty ribbons for hanging the wreaths or tying gift bows). After the craft class, I’ll be signing copies of Design*Sponge at Home (which you could use for another nice gift), and we’ll have drinks and treats to celebrate the end of the book tour. We’ll also have a gorgeous backdrop designed by our own Halligan Norris, against which you can take photos of your friends.

Since this is our final East Coast event, we’re opening it up to not just 30, but 75 people! So if you’re interested in joining us, please sign up below. (There will not be a general admission after the craft; this is one big craft class event). Last time, the tickets sold out quickly, so please order now if you’d like to reserve a spot. The details are below. We hope to see you there to celebrate the end of our tour! xo, grace

Event: Design*Sponge Holiday Craft Event + Book Signing/Celebration
Date: Thursday, December 1st
Time: 6–8pm
Location: Anthropologie Home Office/The Navy Yard/Building 543/Philadelphia, PA
Details: We will be making holiday wreaths to take home as gifts (materials, tools and ribbon will be provided), and there will also be books for sale and to be signed (these are the special Anthropologie edition books with 16 extra pages of content).
Charity: We’ll be collecting art supplies for Fresh Artists. Please bring a new art supply (pens, markers, crayons) with you to donate to this fantastic local arts charity.

RSVP: There are only 75 spots available. Tickets are $40 each and include all your supplies, drinks and food. Please reserve your spot here if you’d like to attend; we expect the spots to close quickly.

**We have sadly had to postpone our Toronto event until early 2012 due to scheduling conflicts. I will update with more information on the new event/date ASAP. I’m so sorry for the change in schedule, but we’re looking forward to getting to Toronto right after the holidays!

d*s book tour: norfolk virginia event details!

To say that I’m excited to do a book tour event in Norfolk, Virginia is a massive understatement. Ever since I started the blog I’ve been wanting to put something together in my hometown area (I grew up in Virginia Beach just down the highway), so I’m thrilled to be able to announce our book stop in Norfolk at one of my favorite independent book stores, Prince Books. This is going to be a special event because my whole family will be there, so I hope you can make it if you’re in the area this November. The details are below- we’ll be doing both a craft event and signing/party (with cupcakes courtesy of my Mom and Dad!) so I hope you’ll come join us for the fun! xo, grace

Event: Crafting Workshop and Book Signing/Party at Prince Books

Time: 6-8pm (6-7pm for the craft project, 7-8pm for the party/signing)
Location: Prince Books (109 E. Main Street, Norfolk, VA 23510)
Details: Come join the D*S team from Brooklyn and Virginia as we celebrate the launch of the book by recreating one of the stamping projects from the DIY chapter. (Please note: Books will also be available for sale through Prince Books)
RSVP: Space for the craft event is limited to 30 people so please RSVP HERE soon (The craft fee for this event is $25 and includes snacks, drinks and craft supplies). You can also RSVP for the main party/signing right here (if you buy a craft ticket you don’t need to buy a party ticket).

d*s book tour: richmond virginia event details!

I’ve been waiting to get to this leg of the book tour since we first starting planning. Richmond is the city where I was born and has remained one of my favorite places to visit ever since. I grew up spending holidays in Richmond, attending Governor’s School on the U of R campus and it’s always been one of my favorite places to try to see concerts or art shows when I’m home. So I’m thrilled to be able to visit Richmond next month and have not one, but two separate events. The details for both events (a lunchtime talk/signing and a separate evening craft event/signing celebration) are below. I hope to see you there! xo, grace

Event: Craft/Book Signing/Celebration at Anthropologie

Date: Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Time: 5–8pm (5–6pm craft workshop/6:30–8:00pm signing + celebration)

Location: Anthropologie (Stony Point Fashion Park, 9200 Stony Point Parkway, Richmond, VA)

Details: We will be teaching all craft-event participants how to make their own custom wooden wax seal! Craft guests will watch a demo, make their own wax seal and leave with the seal they made, along with sealing wax and stationery to test on. Afterward, we’ll get together for the larger celebration of the book launch, where you can buy copies of the book and have yours signed! Drinks and treats will be served. Proceeds from this event will benefit the local arts charity Art 180.

We will also have a custom backdrop designed by Lauren O’Neill against which you can take photos with your friends and fellow guests!

RSVP: The crafting event is limited to 35 people, so please RSVP HERE soon ($10 per person for the craft event, your ticket is good for the signing/celebration, too). The main event will fill up quickly, so please RSVP HERE for that soon, as well.

In addition to our evening event, we’ll be doing a fun lunch-time event earlier in the day with Richmond Magazine. I’m so excited to have two events in town! I’ll be making a 20 minute presentation about the book and we’ll all have lunch together and do a Q&As with attendees. The space can hold up to 400 people, so if you’re free I hope you’ll come join us!

DAYTIME Event: Luncheon event/Q&A/Talk sponsored by Richmond magazine

Date: Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Time: 11:30-1:30pm
